  1. She was known as the Grey Ghost? I've heard she was known as The Lucky E, The Fighting Gray Lady, and The Galloping Ghost of the Oahu Coast. There are so many ships nicknamed Gray Ghost / Galloping Ghost (RMS Queen Mary was the Grey Ghost and USS Houston was The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast) that it probably wouldn't be a useful thing to base appearances on.
  2. I think it's even worse than that: New Orleans struck me as a bartender, meaning she'd pour/mix drinks for everyone else in the room before she got around to herself. I'd be more afraid of her knowing the skeletons in my closet than the other way around.
  3. I doubt it, since I suspect David J would beat me to the punch. I'm not greedy. A whole submarine fleet decked out with 8" guns will do me just fine.
  4. So, if I really, Really, Really,Really, Really, Really, Really work hard at it I could get a 16" gun on Nautilus, right?
  5. You don't say... I don't know whether to bless or curse Käpt'n Korky for introducing me to Postmodern Jukebox, so I'll see his Seven Nation Army for Blue Monday:
  6. So Bismark was just a 50 thousand t delivery device. I have no skin in either game, so I consider Bismark just as doomed as Cossack and Ark Royal.
  7. We've got a couple of weeks before the next Lore question, so to stimulate Lore question ideas I will ask: Where does the legendary mascot cat Unsinkable Sam reside in 1939? For that matter, does Unsinkable Sam start out as simply "Sam" (or Oskar/Oscar) and still have to earn that title? And given the amount of evidence that there's more than a little bit of sailor's story to the legend, is Unsinkable Sam a single cat? ...Or even a cat at all? (U-29, are you busy?)
  8. A little something to get Nerpa in trouble:
  9. From Update #14: (first question answer in blue. Second in red.)
  10. I believe in Update 4 Mahan answered those questions:
  11. The May Incident, which took the might out of Loose Lips Might Sink Ships.
  12. ...She captured the Enigma machine...NOT something the Allies wanted put on a headline. In fact, when the USS Guadalcanal successfully captured U-505 on 4 June 1944, the code-breaking department had a fit because they were worried it would jeopardize what Bulldog's prize had been netting them since 1941. ...And don't get me started on the May Incident...
  13. Thanks to Pola, it's been established that a Belle doesn't reflect her ship (heavy cruiser with a "tiny" Belle to Mahan's standards). Otherwise, Bismark, Yamato and Musashi, etc. would surely be giants and all the submarines midgets.
  14. Say it with a deadpan look, in Russian. Or Japanese. Or Turkish, Dutch or Polish. Chinese would be OK, too...
  15. Please think of a tougher challenge, Mignonette. Obviously, you ship her to Ulan Ude, via the Trans-Siberian Railway. ...On an open car and carefully, of course, but she's only a sub. It's not that difficult.
  16. I can't tell if Lexington is saluting Henley, or the sandwich.
  17. That's a lion Metis, not a leopard with a fake Cthulhu beard. As for D'Aosta, I like her personality but her posture is a little off-putting. I like my lionesses rampant, not dormant.
  18. You've watched the Pirates of the Caribbean movies too many times...
  19. The claws look lion-like to me. Ring any bells? She doesn't get along with her sister or the government very well, but takes Pola's advice at face value? Sounds like those boots should be lambskin.
  20. ...Or her jacket is getting smaller. Or both.
  21. Which military? This is a worldwide forum, after all... If you're talking US Navy, when?
