EDIT: Oh dear why. Posting something on a new page forces the browser to scroll to the top where it loads the new page and why does it do that? Why try to be stylish with a forum that looks like bleached post-it notes? And what was all this hubbub about mobile friendliness or something, because I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of mobile friendly... Legate of Mineta
Metis; It was mixed, I believe- I'll ask for the breakdown.
thezooqueen
Sorry this is off topic, but don't you think this thread is done? 8,127 posts. You are not even talking about the same game (technically) as you were in the first post. Along with the message board overhaul, you should consider a thread overhaul. There is no way for anyone to find answers to their questions in a thread like this. Just saying.
Legate of Mineta
It's a fair point, but boy, I'm already nostalgic. How does everyone feel? Archive this, and create a new one?
Nagashofchaos
You get to archive this thread when Y2 comes out :
thezooqueen
Just in time for my grandchild to play... Mind you I don't have grandchildren yet... thankfully
Legate of Mineta
Generational gameplay! NoC; Actually, at least I'd prefer to keep the thread, so...;)
Ascartand
I say keep it. It has been useful for a long time and most of it has been only lore.
Legate of Mineta
It is steeped in ancient knowledge.
SillyOne
Keep it, but force Schwarzbart to forever toil in the 'compiled information' threads. Plus three hundred and twenty six pages of questions being described as 'a few' helps clue people in to what kind of time-scale SoonTM operates on. freespace2dotcom
I agree this thread needs to be put to rest, but I think it should be done when Y2 comes out, so we can have a point of reference as to what might be in it years down the road. Schwarzbart
6 hours ago, Legate of Mineta said: miktami; Typically yes, for the tutors. For siblings, it's more often the case they are in the same College, but not necessarily. And answers! 2) The "mad legate" was Bonifatio Randsom, the Durand Regent was Mario Ghiberti, and the year was 1615. It actually more or less set the stage for Odo Strada's duel (see the next answer), in that it led to citizens of Mineta demanding greater Guard involvement in Academy affairs. That said, Randsom's Gates practices were never proven in Minetan courts, and the Guards were terrified of him - the rumors of Draconic voices being heard counseling him actually worked in his favor. He remained Legate until his death (of relatively natural causes) in 1622. Regent Ghiberti's faction then tried to get him installed as the next Legate, but he was a terrible politician and the efforts backfired; he retired from his academic positions under a cloud within a month of Randsom's death. 3) It was probably in 1619: Professor Monterio's predecessor, Odo Strada (aka Odo the Learned), died in a duel with a lieutenant in what was then a very corrupt and dysfunctional Minetan Guard. That said, Una Junger (the Negation professor before Briardi) resigned her position in 1650 specifically so that she would be out of office when she fought her last fight (long story), it's whispered that Piaxenza's predecessor was poisoned in 1646 (though it's probably not true), and we're still not quite sure what became of the previous Legate in late 1651. There's plenty of grist for the rumor mill. 4) Depends on the political climate. Part of the oath Academagia faculty swear upon receiving their posts is that they'll defend Mineta from foreign aggressors and from "corruption" (which originally referred to draconic cults and dragons proper, but has also come to represent any crises that come bubbling out of magical gates), so in times of war or supernatural unrest the professors are very much on the front lines of the city's defenses, and are often specifically targeted by the other side; there have been decades when College Durand alone has sacrificed over a dozen Regents. These days, survival rates are much higher. Though, obviously, if anything happens to the Captain all bets are off... 5) We dare say the opportunity will present itself. That said, Everard's work notwithstanding, strictly mathematical flavored magic is frowned upon in Mineta; it's largely seen as a Saisyne gimmick and a less artistic approach to enchantment - and the fact that it's begun to catch on in the Vilocian-speaking world doesn't help. 6) Steam propulsion isn't really a thing with airships, except in the northeast; enchantment is just more efficient and less dangerous than mechanical acceleration. Their major advantage is that they do not require wind, or a mage to create wind, in order to travel. So, an airship propelled by wind alone can usually sustain speeds of up to thirty miles an hour for extended periods; the record is just over forty. Things like the Red Ship - very rare things - are a different bag. Almost no maneuverability, as a rule, but in practice they're supersonic (though technically most use Revision effects to compress distances in front of them, sort of, so that they're not actually traveling as far as they ought to be traveling - if that makes sense). They're profoundly dangerous artifacts, really. Wow thanks for giving out this great lore answers
Legate of Mineta
And, the answer: "They were a mix - and in the modern period, they're not fully understood. "Durand" was almost certainly a nickname that the historical figure took up as a kingly name, and which the family then inherited as a patronym: "the Enduring." "Morvidus," in contrast, seems to be a formal version of a known first name of the period, "Morvoldr" "Vernin" is probably another adjective, connoting the first growth of Spring - that could be a name or a kingly title in the old Choretan polities. "Avila" was probably a place name, originally: a contraction of a name meaning "the Eagle River." Best guess for "Hedi" is that it was a first name, but it may have been a military title, possibly etymologically close to the modern Highland Staadian "Jadzike/Jadziko" ("fighter of wars"). "Aranaz" is thought to come from lesser Draconic -the form of the speech spoken by servants and slaves- perhaps meaning "the Spider," and "Godina" probably came from a phrase meaning "Good Friend" - possibly a personal name, or possibly not. But historians and linguists argue over all of it."

Then people like you should be banned from the forum complete. (Serious such postings like yours are not even funny) One reason this thread get so long is because people use it for discussions that have nothing to do with in game questions and at the same time bury actual questions. I'm sure we would not have half the length of this thread if it would be just limited to questions and the (try to) answer. I also not see a point in closing this thread unless someone put together all the questions and answers for easy view like Nyaa did once here:
Metis
I see no point in archiving this threat and opening a new one, really. The new one is just going to go on just like the last and it'll just make everything from this threat harder to find. Incidentally, good job on making the forum look significantly less like it was made with 2010 resolutions in mind . Now all we need is a fix for the auto-double line break and most pre-update posts won't look like a complete mess. Also I just noticed that apparently non-mod posts can be liked, and apparently the leaderboard is for tracking people with the most liked posts over a given time period? What's next, Facebook competitions at the Olympics?
Rhialto
Since this thread continues on its pace, I have some questions. Firstly, is it possible, in either Y1 or a future year, for a player character to join the thieves guild? Secondly, if the player character help Miya Hikari to join the thieves guild, will that play a role in her character's story in future years? Thirdly, is Miya telling the truth about being from a distant land, or is this just part of her effort to seem noticeable? Could someone from her pseudo-Japanese homeland realistically appear in Mineta?
Legate of Mineta
Rhialto; Yes, to the Thieves Guild. In some ways, you already can join in Y1, to a degree. No comment on Miya's Y2 story. No comment on her ancestry. It's possible for visitors from faraway lands to come, yes.
Rhialto
since it is possible for visitors from faraway lands to come to Mineta, then why is there so little known about this world's China-analogue? furthermore, are any parts of the known world deliberately isolated from other parts through various magics? Not just the obvious (magical barriers, magical mists), but also through, e.g., being incapable of being mapped, protected by memory-wiping effects, etc.
thezooqueen
China is so massive now it has spread to every planet in the universe. Beware knockoff wands and potions. hehe Jokeing
Rhialto
thezooqueen: I was inspired to ask my question by the following quotation from World of Academagia: "Very little is known for the China equivalent. It is rumored to be under the sway of Dragons, and fabulously wealthy".
thezooqueen
I was only teasing, besides what you found is probably about all the answer you will get. Besides if it is owned by dragons, not much is getting in or out. That would be enemy territory to everyone. Just a guess. That post was also made in 2010 and everything has probably changed like twice every year since then
Legate of Mineta
Oh no, the lore hasn't true. That's still the case today.
thezooqueen
I thought I think his name is Tarvixio Sido was from an Asian area because he speaks Bassan. Granted he could have just learned it. In one of the Adventures they mention that people who ask about Bassan language are usually after pirates or refugees. I am just assuming refugees from dragon enslavement?
Legate of Mineta
They tend to be refugees from the Gates-maddened rulers of that area, which Dragons may or may not have a hand in.
thezooqueen
That is interesting to know. That quest that required Bassan led to a book that unlocked Mastery. All sorts of trouble coming from that place.
