Likely they would first try to contact the Family.

Mundane or magical? Does that depend on the student too? Given the setting, and how important time is in search & rescue, (Not to mention missing classes!) I would think they would make sure as quickly as possible, but...

@Legate of Mineta: 1. how common are betrothals among nobility?

2. Is there a minimum age at which a person must be before being able to enter a betrothal?

3. Is conspiracy to help a person violate a betrothal (by, for example, not being present at a wedding or somehow voiding the betrothal contract without the consent/knowledge of the parents) a crime?

I think those question where already ask so from what I remember:

1. Very common.

2. No.

3. Not sure about this one but the answer is probably depends on the country/family involved (as in it's not the same thing to help break the duke betrothal than to break an impoverished one with a burgher)

@Legate of Mineta: 1. Has any student, at Academagia or any similar educational institution in the Empire of Man, ever been executed for illegal reptology, or is this merely theoretical?

2. How would one gain permission to study reptology (not just at Academagia)? Are the permissions supposed to be carefully recorded?

3. Would it be legal to suggest that a similar licensing scheme be adopted for gates/mastery magic?

About question 3: For the Mastery sub-school of Syncrhonicity, that we already can learn through year 1, you need a licence! But if you read the adventure for it you should know this already. I personal suspect there some more sub school of Mastery and Gate magic that could be learned if you have the right licence (like Gate magic banishing or maybe even teleport) but its a big No for the general study of both schools.

Still it could be a step toward complete allowing both school again to give some young students a licence to learn from old masters of this schools so that the knowledge not get complete lost.

@freespace2dotcom: Spiders are not insects, but arthropods.

@Legate of Mineta: This talk about the practicality of Familiar bonds makes me think: Would it be correct to think that Familar bonds are first formed involuntarily by magic users around puberty, but that as they grow more magically proficient, they may choose to take another familiar instead? If so, is there a procedure at Academagia to force students (and possibly professors) to change their familiars, as Louise Kandinsky has been told might be best for her? Furthermore, are there some mages who, having mastered the familiar bond, choose to use this mastery to forgo a familiar bond altogether? Finally, although whether people have taken other people as familiars is redacted, is there any law against doing so?

4. Could a mage be sued for taking a familiar whom another person may have claim to (such as a farmer's horse or a nobleman's wife)?

Anything you smash with your boot is an insect imo, despite modern classification.

Legate, Even if used ruined Volauge is not useful for raising ships anymore, can scraps of it still be useful for things like making bows or book planks? Or does the wood lose all of its magical properties if tampered with too much?
