Kriegsmarine in North Africa?

Hello! I know that we have a lot of history nerds on this site, but I have a question for you guys. Do you guys know if the Kriegsmarine was involved in the North Africa campaign or fought alongside the Afrika Korps. I was wondering because the North African front is one of my favorite things to read about concerning WW2 and I was curious to see if there was a German naval presence on that front. If possible, please name some ships that were in that area.

Thanks :).

The Kriegsmarine was involved in the Mediterranean campaign, to be correct.

However, its presence, although not small per se (involving quite a lot of ships), was restricted to smaller ships (such as E-Boats) and mainly submarines. One exception was the largest Kriegsmarine vessel in the Mediterranean, the destroyer Hermes, formerly the Greek Vasilefs Georgios captured during the invasion of Greece and taken over by the Germans.

Of course, after September 1943 the Germans took over as many Italian ships as they culd (those that could not move to Malta and were left behind), especially old destroyers, torpedo boats and corvettes, but although the naval war did continue, they didn't achieve much with them.
