I noticed somebody was doing something involving Familiars on the wiki, but I don't think it's comprehensive enough. See every exotic familiar has a default name so you don't technically need to get to the school to know what pet you're getting and it should also help people that want to give an appropriate custom name to the familiar. I've also listed the default stats of every familiar I've encountered. Oh and Legate very amusing giving the Fish the default name Elephant, I definitely didn't see that coming. ;)

Hm, isn't this internet thing handy? Since I now seem to have a vague grasp of what I'm doing in the game (I managed to make an item at last, yay for me), I might as well pretend I'm doing something useful and make a test character and make a few notes. Anything in specific that needs looking at?

It's worth it :)

And collecting all this information is really teaching me the intricacies of the game.

Am also going to start a 0 point character so I have all the skills on the basic level to see the increases without missing anything. Hopefully it will have enough unlocked to get everywhere I need.

I got tired of looking at this, so I decided to toss it over and see if any of you wiki-cats can make heads or tails of it. (Unfortunately, the public computer I use doesn't really like the wiki all that much, so I'm not that good for adding it myself.)

These are just a list of locations that I discovered. Some are common, some are rare. This is not anywhere close to all of them, or even most of them: I mean, heck, I don't even have the libraries! I formated it as the name of the Ability, the Discover Chance the place had when I took a gander at it, the 'main' passive bonus (usually named after the location itself), and then what you can do there/Abilities, followed by any other passive bonuses the place might have (I didn't go in to detail, here: IE, some of the sewing objects need a sewing kit, or you need to make friends with a Prof to have some of the Prof options open, yadda yadda). I hope it's useful to someone.

Mikka, Mad props to you.

No, no, there isn't, it's just that looking at your post I began doubting that simple fact :) I was actually writing about this just now. Here are my thoughts.

I think academ wiki is a wonderful thing. Sure some people like to explore. But other people like to get all the data right away and in one place to analyze it and devise useful strategies. And however you play, sooner or later you have a question about something that should be described in game but either is not, or it's buried somewhere and you do not know where to find it. On forums this leads to several people repeating the same questions in different threads (like how do you get befriend). But with a wiki you have a single place to add whatever information you find in the game and everybody can read it with ease.

That being said, I have a question for Legate of Mineta. Is it technically possible to add the ability to copy text from the game?

Specifically text from the left and right screens: spells, abilities, locations and all that. We obviously do not need text from the main screen where adventures take place.

At the moment I am adding whatever characters I befriend to the wiki, but typing takes time (not so much for some of us, as I just discovered ;) ) and entries for the students do not look pretty when the only thing there is the stats for a clique ability. Copying text directly from the game would really help us fill in the Wiki and in turn help a lot of players to understand the game better. Maybe this will even take some pressure from yourself, as there will be less trivial questions in the forums.

There will obviously needs to be some agreement about how much text can be copied from the game into the wiki, if we can do it word by word, but I think some policy can be create. I think an argument can even be made that having a good wiki with lots of text and maybe some pictures from the game can alleviate some problems of the game's interface. People would be able to read the same text but in a much bigger, scalable window of the browser and it wouldn't cost you a dollar. As it is now, I gave up after reading maybe 30 student entries. I liked all the fluff, and really wanted to know more about my classmates, but the interface kills half the fun. Wiki can fix this. Perhaps even advertise the game a little, as seeing a good wiki full of lore would leave a good impression on people who like lore in their game. Maybe someone can even make a student roster. Maybe that someone will even be me. I LOVE the pictures of the students, but HATE clicking 166 times (and scrolling, oh the horror, scrolling) just to see all of them.

Hm, I think I am getting little carried away. Anyway, Legate, can we please get a working copy & paste in game? Pretty please? Pretty please, with sugar on top? And what do you think about copying game lore (as opposed to game mechanics) into the wiki? Is it a good idea, a bad idea, a heaven-forbid-no idea?

@ Fhoenix

Thanks for all the student entries. Even if they are lacking the fluff part, I love having the facts of them there already.

A copy-paste function from the game would be a godsent for the wiki. As I am getting sore fingers from all the typing :)

Currently at 524 articles, and growing ;)

@ Mikka

Respect for typing them all out here. Will check which ones we are still missing in the wiki, as soon as I have some time. Still have a few other things I want to insert into the wiki. And have to work and stuff too.

@ Legate

I do think that having a good wiki is good promotion for the game. Especially a game as complex and expanded as this one.

I also hope that the information here will remain valid when the second year arrives, so we do not have to make a brand new wiki for that one, but can just add to this one.

Draigh, it's nothing really :) Befriending loses steam fast as the number of people in your clique grows, so I can't really add a lot of people.

I've also been thinking that maybe at the moment we are doing it wrong. Creating separate pages for every character will make sense when/if we get permission and means to copy the whole text/picture and create a complete bio. As we concentrate on stats for now, it would more usefull to create tables as Mikka did.

Location - General Area - Passive Ability - Active Ability

Character - College - Clique Ability

That way you would be able to compare different abilities and know what every place does without visiting a whole lot of pages.

I wouldn't hold my breath for most things staying relevant in the second year. Sure lots of descriptions can stay the same (though I hope there will be a major update on character bios after year one), but numbers and even game mechanics will change. They can't just add 10 more levels to learn for the existing skills and be done with it. That wouldn't work for many reasons.

But that's all in the future, I am sure we'll think what to do with the wiki then.

Maybe someone could make a first Shop page? I've posted a few detailed lists of goods on sale in the Shopping thread.

I'm not familiar enough with wikis to start a new category, layout etc. all by myself, but if someone else created one shop I could use as a model I could probably add information for other shops myself as I come across it.

What exotic familiar as we missing from the familiar page? It's driving me mad trying to find it. I spent a few hours just starting and restarting the game trying to find the missing one.

I've also been working on the student entries. I know they're a bit messy, I was just hoping to get the information up there and once it's up it can be prettied up.

Once I get to the half-term exam mark I'll include which students are in which classes so we can compile class lists for them just in case people were curious who's taking rhetoric or music or whatever with you.

I'm not actually keen on the idea of having all the descriptive text there. The game is a text based game. People should be buying the game in order to read the text, to explore, to find out about the characters and to read all the effort that has gone into creating a wonderful world. The wiki is just supplemental.

I think my own biggest concern would be if people were to copy and paste the adventure text. The adventures are such a huge part of the game I'd hate to see the exact wording of them on the wiki and for people to be able to read through them without actually buying and enjoying the game. I think having a copy-paste function just opens a whole pile of problems even if it would initially make the wiki-work a lot easier to do.

I'd much rather just type a short summary of each character, adventure, etc. I can probably summarise each character and their adventures in one line.

Of course it's up to the game developers.

Personally I am not much of a fan of putting the whole adventure there. But the choices, required stats and effects are pretty welcome.

The copy-paste is mostly handy for the spell and pheme descriptions, but also for the instructors and students to add to their pages.

And we could make a table with all the students in it and their abilities, but now you can also add their specific adventures and possible other related stuff to the personal character's page. My suggestion would be to make a separate Guide area in which people can post How-To's and comparison-guides.

.H.;

The Familiar you are missing is Wildflower, the Sprite.

THANKYOU! I'll add it to the list. Thanks.

Are there some familiars that have been set to be rarer than others or is it just sheer random chance? I only saw the doll once, the faux-dragon has only appeared three times for me and the carnivorous plant and the shade seems really rare as well. Strangely I haven't managed to get the snake either and I would have thought that would be more common.

As soon as Patch 3 comes out, I'll go back to doing locations like I did earlier on the thread (unless there's something I should do differently to make it easier on the wiki- lemme know ;)). Not that anyone else doing locations wouldn't be awesome, but as I'm already going to do it for my own purposes, I can get that on the boards for you guys to add on the wiki if you want them.

I think a good thing to do to help the wiki would be to have people start on Adventure logging.

What I mean by that is to check your skills, and start an adventure. Notice what color the options you get are, and then note down that Option, the color, and your current skill level. That'll mean people can peek over, see 'aha, that Adventure seems to rely on Revision and Courage, and they were blue to someone at skill level 4 and 6... awesome'.

Like, as an example...

"This is Mikka's Adventure, the first part of it:

'Adventure: Making Strangers On the Internet Do What I Want Them To Do'

First Option choices: Persuasion (green at 10), Courage (red at 3), Intimidation (blue at 7),

Second Option choices: Glamour (green at 10), Observation (purple at 6)

etc, etc

On the second part of that chain, Adventure: Really Trying To Make Strangers On the Internet Do What I Want Them To Do' (btw, needs on, to uncapitalized)

First Option: blah, blah, blah..."

Then someone else can pop in and say, "Well, for that second option during the first adventure, Observation was blue at 8, and I also got Flowers, green at 5..'

...Which would allow us to say 'Aha, then that Second Option has a level 5 skill level Observation option!' ...or... something like that. It'll never be totally accurate due to the hidden modifiers and the like, but it's a step to collecting adventures to the point where we can figure out how high level they expect us to be and what skills are required for them. I know that it's intended for that to be added in a Content Patch somewhere along the way, but this will be a start, and I doubt they'll be able to list every skill used in the Adventure anyway. :)
