All the scuttling of U-XXXXs between May 4th and May 8th was due to the Regenbogen-order. (Shiro mentioned it conjoined with U-30 on May 4th).

The Regenbogen (rainbow) order commanded the scuttling of all german submarines to prevent them from falling into enemy hands in case defeat was imminent.

But the moment Berlin fell (ont he 3rd), the austrian corporal was dead and Admiral Dönitz took over, said Dönitz canceled the order. Because some partial surrender to british forces were already done and the turnover of the U-Boote was part of the terms. So Dönitz gave order on the 4th to 1. stop the submarine warfare altogether and 2. not to destroy ships or weapons. That order was given via radio message, so the british forces (and thus the allies) most probably were aware of it. Which makes me curious about the ships sunk after May4th 1945 by allied forces.

However, most submarine commanders ignored the order believing Dönitz true intention was for them to still scuttle their own ships. So they did. (Anyone remember Scapa Flow 1919, eh?)

Subsequently they gave Shiro probably the most packed workload of this thread ever. So I would  like to recommend him for an Iron Belle Forum Cross first class or a Virtuti Belle Forumi first class. ;)

All others brought their ships to american or british ports. The last ship on May 19th 1945, afaik.

There is a well-known description of events from the Polish soldiers of the 1st Polish Armored Division on May 5 surrender of Wilhelmshaven still the sailors tried to sink the submarines but was interrupted by Polish soldiers. They seemed to still want to execute the order .

Polish soldiers from the 1st Polish Armored Division captured 17 not scuttling german submarines in Wilhelmshaven.

Thank you Admiral Korky for Korky's badges:D  Accepts them.

P.S.  Last german submarines surrender August 17, 1945!
