A few in game questions

I have a few questions about the book 'Diavesque the Living'. I found it in one of the adventures, using Gates, but I forgot what it was called. Does anyone remember the name of the adventure?

More importantly, I had it in my inventory for a while, but after a week or so, it just disappeared! The heck? What exactly happened here?

What, REALLY?

Dammit, I never knew that. Wish there was a notification message informing you that your items have been confiscated, then I could've just reverted to an earlier save. Is there a way to get confiscated items back? I know there's a thread in the spoiler room about it, but no one seems willing to divulge any information :(

Flapja - wait, I mean evaporate, try to imagine the instructors confiscating items when you were not looking!

Those mean instructors are probably poking and prodding your book right now, all the while saying how little kids should not be playing with evil books.smile.gif

But back to prevvy students. Wow, Durand is the good guy's college right? They have some pretty interesting people in there.

And Vettor "Wet Shirt" Conta? Seriously now? Water Boy Conta? Amada Kiffer wears a white shirt under the school robes OHMYGODS!!

And for those who are inquisitive, my screenname was chosen over a decade ago. I decided that I wanted something that would be completely unique. (so I could use it everywhere) My favorite game back then was one of the first computer games I ever played (on the first computer my family owned).

As I am what I would call a hardcore gamer, capable of enjoying the vast majority of titles, limited mostly by how much I would pay for them; It should come to no great surprise that a name I chose for internet usage would be associated with a video game that is itself associated with my first internet experiences. (hence dotcom) most people here and elsewhere shorten it to simply "freespace" because it flows nicely. I've also seen "Free" before. I actually like to say that my full sceenname is simply stylized as "freespace2dotcom" and is actually pronounced as "freespace." :)

Ironically, since the actual website for my namesake shut down, I've toyed with the idea of snatching the domain name, as unlikely as that might be to pull off.

Now, on to questions. How are the Captains of Mineta chosen? Also, how politically dangerous would it be to bestow the "archmage" title?

I would like to ask as to what "archmage" means in this setting. It sounds mostly like a nobility title, which would say alot...

Freespace;

Are you excited about the KickStarter for Star Citizen, then? :)

The Captains are appointed by the Emperor, but since there is no Emperor, the Captains have (mostly) been appointed by acclaim. That is, the representatives of the nobles, the citizens and the Imperial Temple choose an appointee. Because this authority is not entirely legitimate, a Captain handing out ancient Imperial Titles is likely to be immediately replaced and his appointments overturned.

Mage is short for Magister, and refers to a branch of the Imperial bureaucracy which oversaw magic. It's not, strictly speaking, noble, but as the only Archmages around are those who have inherited the title, it makes it essentially aristocracy.

The jury is still out on that. While I fully support the ideals put forth in the trailer, and I always love the underdog, I am somewhat hesitant. As a rule, I despise games that prioritize multiplayer over single. This one, while promising, gives very little on how actual gameplay will take place.

Star citizen seems too close to that border for me. Furthermore, despite the eyecandy, there's not a lick of story that I could tell. Storytelling is what draws me to games and those are the ones that I play over and over like a good movie. I loved the PS1 era Final fantasy games, and 10 was passable, but 12, as pretty as it was... Let's just say that that game was a turning point in my gaming career. :( Never again will I pay money for a game, regardless of the pedigree of the developers, until I know with at least 95% certainty that it's money well spent.

...So you know I had a pretty damn good impression from Academagia before I even spent a penny. :)

Anyway.. Questions... :)

1. Will we have a chance to set our own character's birthdays?

2. WARNING! I'm about to go on an etymology speil here.

So, given that the characters in game actually speak fantasy-version "Latin" which is conveniently translated into English for the player ;) I have to ask about the meaning of the word magic as it applies to the setting. Magic, Magister, the shortened mage... Those words all share the same root in magi. (duh) The word "Magi" has ties, etymologically speaking, to stars (the most promenent example that comes in mind being the biblical magi and the birth of Christ.) science (Magister is an old term for a professor) and alchemy (because back then it was still a part of science.)

Now to the question: I *know* that all of these meanings fit in-setting, but I am curious if, in "Elumian" the word "magic" itself has these same root connections in this setting, or instead it developed as a word to describe the energy(?) in this setting that is magic, and is not by itself associated to the items I previously described?

Yeah, sorry about that. This is the condensed version. :)

3. In year 2 Will we get the chance to ask one of the older professors on that "deeper" reason why Gates was banned?

Ravenprix. That adventure was well written! That brings a couple questions to mind, such as...

4. Exactly what constitues attempting to skip ahead of your studies? And what punishments are in place for that, if any?

5. The spell that you try to learn. (vitrolen I think..? I can't remember. :( ) Exactly what made that spell more advanced? The phemes are more compicated? those effects we have yet to see? And at what year is one supposed to learn it? Based on the reaction, I would guess a year 3-4 spell maybe?

Edit: 6. Oh, and student councils. I know you're tight-lipped on this but surely you can tell us if they're college or academy- centric??

Another Edit: 7. Are there True Names? Complete with the power that they represent?

The word 'Magic' comes from the Dragons, and does not have a 'Latin' origin, if that answered the question. :)

It depends on the Instructor, in both cases.

I am not 100% certain what the intent was, but it may have been the Border.

Academy.

I see. I figured almost as much. Happy about the birthday thing.

True names would be too close to Mastery, so if that concept does exist in this setting, it would be a powerful, if illegal thing, no doubt. If You don't do it, that's fine, but I'd love to read all about lore related to that sort of knowledge which in theory wouldn't requre phemes.

Ah, well.

Now I have to decide on a birthday for my character. I myself am a summer-born, though I prefer the cold... So many choices....

Heh, I was born in winter but I much prefer summer. (Summer here in Denmark though, I've tried those in southern Europe and in one case a bit more south. Too hot, too hot by far.)

Happy about the birthday too. Leoshi, you can choose what you wish but not always what you get. Remember that the giving is a gift in itself... or something... my point is you should be handing out cake!

Actually I was thinking of a wishlist and how you could influence your chances by first giving your friends their preferred gifts. tongue.gif

And besides what kind of cake should I be giving out? Vanilla cake? Orange cake? Small honey cakes? Chocol ... wait, those are illegal.

Ah what the heck, once everybody eats the chocolate cake, so delicious and moist, we will see why it was made illegal.

Chocolate cake. The cake is ... grrrr ... a ... li ... li ... AN ARROW IN PHILIPPE'S KNEE!! (See what you made me do Adrian?sad.gif)

I was born in Chicago, IL. Very few places have colder winters. I love it. Even so, It's capable of having some very hot summers as well. I spent a great deal of time in Hawaii, as a sailor, and I can say that the "year round summer" they have is quite nice, as it never does seem to get unbearable. (surrounded by ocean it's no surprise) but I like snow. :(

Anyway... Legate:

How big is tourism in Mineta? Given the setting I can't imagine it being very large or advanced, but if there's a thief's guild surely they must have some gullible tourists for the cutpurses, no? What kind of "attractions" are likely to be seen by visitors to the city?

Ahaha!

I know of the map, but I suspect that certain places there might not be common tourist spots. In the Renaissance, most government locations didn't have public relations departments, and unless you had genuine business there, you'd probably get shooed away, and I note that guards in that era had far fewer qualms about breaking bones if necessary. :)

Plus A lot of those places, while certainly get some visitors, (And indeed I remember the Legate saying that the campus was open to guided tours) but they are also damned big, and I'm curious if the people who might afford to take vacation in Mineta might go someplace that was built more for tourists in mind, rather than places built "for art" that would get a few.

The City of Mineta, especially the Upper City, has a lot of tourism, but not in the modern sense. It's religious tourism, or pilgrimages, to sites where the New Gods lived, worked and died. In that regard, the Academagia itself is renowned as both being the (former) site of Noimea's Spear, and as a dedication to Athanasius.

Coventional, modern, tourism...not so much. :)
