Legate of Mineta
Metis; Yeah. Rhialto; It can certainly be an ecclesiastical crime, yes. The specific crime is levied Against the Natural Order of Elumia.
freespace2dotcom
So, if Briardi would admit to professors supposedly needing to be well rounded, I would like to ask if Briardi's desire to keep me away from the path of the omni disciplnarian is grounded on the belief that learning multiple pillars is dangerous? Or is it more on the issue of mixing magic from the pillars? OR, is it that students not satisfied with just one pillar tend to find their way to... Less than legal magic? Rhialto
Has any person ever been charged with the ecclesiastical crime of using astrology too much, or is it just a crime that is on the books but ever enforced? How much use of astrology would be too much to be legal?
Legate of Mineta
Free; For that, you'd have to ask her. Rhialto; Certainly they have, and fairly recently, too. It's usually a matter of whose opposing interests were checked, in regards to its legality...;)
Schwarzbart
1) Will the parent of a noble NPC student bring up that according to a astrology reading the love interest with our player don't work out? 2) Will our noble or even royal blood parent also order a astrology reading when our char develop a love interest? Metis
I just want to say, both cases sound like a perfect opportunity to...fudge the results a little, if it's within the PC's power to do so.
Legate of Mineta
Schwarzbart; 1) 2) They should, if they don't already. I guess it depends on if you keep it a secret, and how serious it is?
Metis
So IIRC Gates mages would be called on to defend Choris against invasions from other planes, back in their day before Gates was banned. Of course now it is banned, and in theory people are sitting ducks to such an invasion. Even if there exists some (likely unknown) factor that would prevent such a thing from actually occurring, surely the guards, or the Academagia, or some greater authority in Mineta would have come up with a plan in case Gates suddenly shoot out of the ground all over town and sentient cubes start flooding the streets. What is that plan? Or is everyone just going to run in circles and scream like schoolgirls until Schohanwicht or whatever steps in and fixes the mess? Metis
Hmm...you could close a Gate (reasonably) safely with at least one of Negation, Revision, Astrology and Throw Rock, right?

freespace2dotcom
Can a Gate be designed to reopen with Astrological factors even after it was forcibly closed with Negation, Revision, and a rock?
Legate of Mineta
No, if closed, it's magic is broken. Of course, a different Spell may reopen it.
Schwarzbart
I think that with certain Negation techniques integrated into a gate it actual could temporary shut down with negation spells as trigger, unless the negation spell used is much stronger then the one used creating this gate. Legate of Mineta
Schwarzbart; Yes, if you knew what was being cast, or could make the trigger be broad enough, such a thing would be possible...
freespace2dotcom
1. Can you explain what might happen if two or more mages tried casting varying Mastery spells on a poor victim simultaneously? Would the more powerful Caster win in the end, or is it possible for something REALLY BAD to happen? 2. Is it possible to cast a line-of-sight spell on one side of a Gate to affect something on the other side? or do you need to be on the same side? 3. Are there any good armchair theories in setting on what kind of spell the Dragons used to start the Exile? 4. Why is Orsi's assistant get a job helping the headmaster of a magic school while being deathly afraid of magic? 5. How often do omens like shattered mirrors happen in setting? Can you say who the last person was that had it at their birth, outside the possible cast of the PC? 6. What or the odds of accidentally running afoul of some dangerous counterspell while using divination magic at the Academagia? (While doing innocent things and not peeking into the girls' dorms or something, haha.)
Schwarzbart
7) What happen when 2 Glamour magus try to affect the dream of the same person at nearly the same time? Would it result in a mixed effect of both glamour, would the stronger glamour win or the first/last glamour win over the other? In general, Spells which affect the same Target at the same time usually follow the principle that a more powerful Spell will be weakened, but cancel out the lesser. If the Spells are applied at nearly the same time, have opposing Phemes, or have synergizing Phemes the results can really be hard to predict. 2. Is it possible to cast a line-of-sight spell on one side of a Gate to affect something on the other side? or do you need to be on the same side? It's possible. 3. Are there any good armchair theories in setting on what kind of spell the Dragons used to start the Exile? There are many theories, but the scale of the magic, and its endurance (indeed, it's seeming regeneration), defies conventional understanding. 4. Why is Orsi's assistant get a job helping the headmaster of a magic school while being deathly afraid of magic? Leaving aside the pure comedy of it, Orso usually has reasons. 5. How often do omens like shattered mirrors happen in setting? Can you say who the last person was that had it at their birth, outside the possible cast of the PC? Certainly, they are uncommon, but not unknown. I'll ask about the last person to have it. 6. What or the odds of accidentally running afoul of some dangerous counterspell while using divination magic at the Academagia? (While doing innocent things and not peeking into the girls' dorms or something, haha.) Pretty high.
Rhialto
1. Are some people paranoid about astrology so that they conceal their birthdays and times from others? 2. Conversely, is it possible to use what one knows about a person and very advanced astrology to calculate that person's birthday and time? 3. How well-equipped/trained are Mineta's Guard? Could they/have they been the equal to soldiers, or are they more of a militia/police/vigiles type of body of people? 4. Related to the above question, how many mages serve the Guard as full time members? What pillars of magic does the Guard prefer in mages, if any? freespace2dotcom
for 4, If you do the Captains side of the main adventure, the fact that he allows you, a 1st year novice, to assist the guard, should hint as to how many mages they have.
Legate of Mineta
Rhi; 1) Not paranoid: good sense. 2) Technically, yes- but practically no. 3) At this time period they are under regular drill, and considered the equal of a military unit. Not always been the case however. 4) The Guard cannot afford full time mages, but city law requires the assistance of the guilds in solving magically related crimes. Rhialto
1. Would Professor Briardi get very angry if one of her students were to allude to her relationship with the Duke of Broken Pines? 2. Several students have died at Academagia, but were any of them nobles? Did any death cause an enormous wave of controversy among parents and/or an inquiry by the government? 3. Would it be illegal in Mineta to publish a work of fiction about a heroic gates mage or mastery mage? 4. Related to the preceding question, was the ban on those two pillars accompanied by a purge of works containing such laudatory but non-instructive references to gates and mastery?
