Is long-term magic having to fight with other problems beside that nature try to revert everything back to how it should be? (I.e. are the mutations like in Ars Magica)

There aren't mutations as a result of most normal magics, but they can occur when certain Phemes or Spells. It isn't common, but is dreaded.

1) That is a good question- I think no, but there are advanced optics, especially for telescopes.

Since people tend to either stay at Contu's school until either they go broke or feel they have learned all they can, I was wondering how long some of those longer stays have been?

2. Does the Thieves' Guild recruit from such gangs? did it arise from such a gang?

3. Just to confirm, the Thieves' Guild is illegal, right? the game is not going the Terry Pratchett route, right (though if it were to, this would be all right)? I have questions that I would like to ask about the Thieves Guild and crime in Mineta later once I know whether it is illegal.

1) No, not really- but very difficult familiars can be exception.

2) Pet specific? Not as far as I know.

3) There has been a lot of research in this area, but as with most research related to Familiars, it's inconclusive.

How bad can islandquakes get? How often do they happen? Does architecture factor it in or do most people just plan to rebuild if it happens? When was the last notable one in Mineta?

They can be devastating, but most that occur are mild and uncommon overall. Public buildings, and those of wealthier families, are intended to last- otherwise, most people tend to rebuild.
