U-31 (Kriegsmarine Type VIIA submarine):  Bombed and sunk in the Jade Bight by RAF aircraft. She was salvaged, repaired and returned to service.

HMS Derwent (RN Hunt-class destroyer):  Struck by Motobomba FFF torpedo dropped by Lufwaffe aircraft in the harbor at Tripoli, Libya, and was beached to prevent her from sinking. She underwent temporary repairs and was towed to the United Kingdom, but her repairs never were completed.

Battle of Cape Matapan/ Battle of Gaudo: An Italian battle fleet set out to raid British merchant convoys.  Their mail had been deciphered however, so a reconnaissance plane just happened to look in the right direction to find them for the British Mediterranean Fleet.  Following a day-long game of tag, Vittorio Vento received a torpedo hit in air attacks from HMS Formidable.  While covering the withdrawing battleship from further air attacks, Pola also took a torpedo hit and was reduced to a dead stop.  Unaware that British radar allowed pursuit past dusk, Zara, Fiume and their destroyer escorts were sent back to assist her.

Fiume (RM Zara-class heavy cruiser):  Shelled practically point blank and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea by HMS Barham, HMS Valiant and HMS Warspite.

Giosue Carducci (RM Oriani-class destroyer):  Shelled and damaged in the Mediterranean Sea by HMS Barham, HMS Valiant and HMS Warspite.  She was scuttled by her crew.

Vittorio Alfieri (RM Oriani-class destroyer):  Shelled and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea by HMS Barham, HMS Warspite and HMS Valiant.

Operation Chariot:  To ensure that there were no large dry dock facilities outside of home waters capable of repairing German battleships, the British attacked the Normandie dry dock at St. Nazaire.

HMS Campbelltown (RN Town-class, Wickes-subclass destroyer, former USS Buchannan): Intentionally rammed and "beached" on the Normandie Dock drydock gates.  Her concealed load of delayed-action explosives went undetected until they detonated the next day, blowing off her bow and causing her aft section to be pulled into the empty dock.  She remained there until 1947.

U-416 (Kriegsmarine Type VII submarine):  Struck a mine and sank in the Baltic Sea off Bornholm, Denmark. She was raised, repaired and returned to service as a training ship by October 1943.

 

 

1944

Operation Desecrate I  (March 30-April 1):  To support troop landings at Aitape and Hollandia, the US carriers of Task Force 58 (USS Enterprise, USS Lexington, USS Yorktown, USS Belleau Wood, USS Cowpens, USS Langley and USS Princeton) launched air attacks on Imperial Japanese targets at Yap, Woleai and the Palau islands.  The gathering carriers and their screening ships were detected; most of the Imperial Japanese fleet escaped before the raids.

Akashi (IJN Akashi-class repair ship):  Sunk in the Pacific Ocean off the north shore of Uruthapel Island, Palau by US Navy aircraft from Task Force 58. She sank in shallow water and was only partially submerged.

Kamakaze Maru( IJN Kamakaze Maru-class destroyer tender): was bombed, rocketed and sunk in Malakal Harbor, Urukhapel Island, Palau by US Navy aircraft from Task Force 58.

Urakami Maru (IJN Urakami Maru-class repair ship):  Bombed, torpedoed and sunk in Malakal Harbor, Palau by US Navy aircraft from Task Force 58.

Wakatake (IJN Wakatake-class destroyer):  Torpedoed and sunk in Karamadoo Bay, west of Babelthaup, Palau by US Navy aircraft from Task Force 58.

Vistula: Kriegsmarine submarine tender was sunk in an American air raid on Wilhelmshaven.

Leone (RM Leone-class destroyer):  Ran aground off Massawa, Italian Eritrea.  She was scuttled by shellfire from Pantera and Tigre.

Giovanni delle Bande Nere (RM Giussano-class light cruiser):  Torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea off Stromboli by HMS Urge.

Adler (Kriegsmarine Adler-class gunnery training ship, former Herluf Trolle-class coastal defence ship):  Sunk at Kiel, Germany by Allied aircraft.

Uta (Kriegsmarine repair ship, formerly a Kriemhild-class guard ship):  Sunk on the Danube River by aircraft. She was raised, repaired and put in Soviet service as Angara.

 

Honorable Mention:

Awa Maru (Red Cross parcel transport, demilitarized IJN transport):  Torpedoed and sunk in the Formosa Straits by USS Queenfish.  She was properly marked and had a guarantee of safe passage.

 

 

1946

I-402 (Type Sen-Toku large aircraft carrier submarine):  Sunk as a gunnery target in the East China Sea, east of Kinai Island, Gotō Islands, by USS Everett F. Larson and USS Goodrich.

Ha-201 (Type Sen Taka Sho (STS) small high speed submarine):  Was lashed alongside I-402 and shared her fate.

 

Operation Road's End: A fleet of surrendered-Imperial Japanese submarines is sailed to "Point Deep Six" off Goto-Retto Island, where they are sunk beyond the 100-fathom line by either by demolition charges or gunfire from USS Nereus and USS Everett F. Larson.

Irben (Kriegsmarine Lauting-class mine transport):  Sunk at Kiel by Allied aircraft.

Manju (IJN Etorofu-class escort ship):  Bombed and damaged by  USAAF aircraft northeast of Green Island, Hong Kong. She drifted near Stonecutter's Island, Hong Kong before she sank.  She was fully refloated on 11 May and towed to Kowloon for repairs, but was unfinished before war's end.

USS S-16 (USN S-class submarine, decommissioned):  Sunk as a target off Key West, Florida.

U-1221 (Kriegsmarine Type IXC/40 submarine):  Bombed and sunk at Kiel in an American air raid.

U-2542 (Kriegsmarine Type XXI submarine):  Bombed and sunk at Kiel in an American air raid.

U-3505 (Kriegsmarine Type XXI submarine):  Bombed and sunk at Kiel in an American air raid.
