I find it ironic that people complain about the excessive amount of choices during character creation, yet whenever I make a character they're like 70% identical to every other character I've made.

Yea because we learned long ago what choices are good and what choices are not so good. I.e. a attribute at 1 is usual a bigger flaw then anything a other background can give you.
