A few in game questions

Why not?

Is that weirder than Joana and Girars? And you have to wonder what would happen and how. :P It should be fun to watch from the sidelines.

Actually I can see Joana and Girars acting like an old couple. Don't ask.

As for Philippe, don't you think that the poor boy has suffered enough? I mean the many events are just to torture him.

Even if he is the wedgie giving, look at me funny and I'll punch you bully.

Now that you have paired him with Ana Flavia the bad lucked girl because of <Error>, he is going to suffer many more embarrassment like falling down with no reason or his spells might hit him instead or ...

or...

On second thought, carry on. And please detail or make-up anything that happens to him.wink.gif

Ana Flavia was one of my early favorites, the idea that the world crumbled around her seemed (and seems) amusing ;)

As to the wedgies - how does he do it? the answer is: Very well! So well infact that he will do it to you while you wear a robe and gives you not 1 not 2 but *3* stress! 3! *cough* yeah...

I hear that there are some people far in the north Elumia but for some reason I never see them in Mineta, do you suppose they have some secret plots up there or just don't like our warm climate? Or maybe they are here and I just never saw them! Do they look different?

To be honest, I much more feared what would happen to Everwine than Ana Flavia. I had at least 4 events that included saving him. Only one was Ana Flavia's (and another that was mostly Rui's fault). Yet he doesn't have the bad luck reputation.

Unrelated topic: In Year Two will we be able to complete student adventures that would still apply? Like, Ana Flavia's :P or Katja's. The ones that they need done, probably haven't completed and aren't related necessarily to Year One's events like parties or extra credit.

Adrian;

There are a few from up north at the Academagia, but the populations there are relatively small, so it's rare to see them.

MadHatt;

I *think* the answer is yes- there were a few old Adventures that will appear in Year 2 if you have not done them, but I can't say for certain that Bessa's or Katja's are among them.

Oh that's good. Most of my playthroughs are like marathons to finish the most possible adventures.

Another question. Is there a spell in Glamour or Mastery to create something of a pacification field? (Recently replayed Old World Blues...). Something to sooth and calm everyone and everything or make them want not to attack? It would be perfect for those who use Gates to summon creatures and learn from them.

Wasn't wizards those street peddlers who use pigeons to throw waterbaloons at us?!

I was wondering, royalty and other high officies around Elumia,.. are wizards allowed to join these kinds of office? If yes, is it then normal that they do - and do other non-spell-casters feel threatened or worried that these wizardlings might use their powers to rig the votes or otherwise use their magic for their own benefit?

*puts on the paranoid hat* -I'd- be worried if the people representing my city were all mind-ensnaring wizards who are general know-it-alls and think of us poor repressed citizens as little more than cattle for their votes and walking sacks of potion ingredients!

Adrian;

There's no law preventing mages from entering high office (provided they have the bloodline; republics are fairly few and far between!), but good rulership and the research and study required to be a good mage are usually mutually exclusive. There have been rulers, both bad and good, who were mages in the past, however.

Mastery is proscribed, so of course no wizard is mind-ensaring...;)

What about marriage? Is it required at a certain age? Can you divorce? Are there prejudices on old women with ten cats? This is mostly for non-mages. Mages, I assume, can do whatever they want. Still, if the character is of important blood (descendent from royalty, nobility) wouldn't the parents try to arrange marriages?

Does a priest have to do the ceremony or is it just bureaucracy?

What's the penalty for murder and how easy is it to cover it up with magic?

*laughs* the last question is a bit leading ;)

You say 'good rulership' when did monarchs *really* care about that sort of thing? Sure they preferred not to leave it in the hands of the idiot son, but if the choice was the spoiled moronic son and the somewhat smarter girl who got into the Academagia (though not without some HEAVY bribes) would the son still get the position if he had been schooled in politics? (I assume his teachers might argue for that...)

Does the time attending Academagia include some sort of hands-on practical "work here for an extended period of time making funny partyhats with magic"-type of thing? I know Briardi (I think it was) send us out to do community service but was thinking more in term of work work - not solve the murder of Henderson & Barkley (The butler most certainly did it).

MadHatt and Adrian;

Leaving aside, for the moment, the numerous exceptions- your questions:

- What about marriage? Is it required at a certain age? Can you divorce? Are there prejudices on old women with ten cats? This is mostly for non-mages. Mages, I assume, can do whatever they want. Still, if the character is of important blood (descendent from royalty, nobility) wouldn't the parents try to arrange marriages?

Nobles, especially first sons and daughters, have differing pressures of course. Arranged marriage is common throughout all levels of society, and sometimes for mages, too. Divorce is possible, with dispensation from the Imperial Temple.

Women with 10 cats are fine (there being, usually, actual mages around to point figures at), but women with 11 cats...;)

Mages do fit into society a little differently, but those that are close to their family and have strong social networks find that the pressures remain.

- Does a priest have to do the ceremony or is it just bureaucracy?

Two Priests perform the ceremony, usually of Isoud and Octavius. In Pievre, you can have a secular marriage, however.

- What's the penalty for murder and how easy is it to cover it up with magic?

Hmmm. :)

The penalty changes based on where you are, whom has been killed, and your station in life, but it's usually death. Your ability to cover it up with magic is dependent on what you remember to correct, and the proficiency of the investigator. Depending on the vicitm, and where you are, the investigators themselves may use magic to determine the culprit...

- You say 'good rulership' when did monarchs *really* care about that sort of thing? Sure they preferred not to leave it in the hands of the idiot son, but if the choice was the spoiled moronic son and the somewhat smarter girl who got into the Academagia (though not without some HEAVY bribes) would the son still get the position if he had been schooled in politics? (I assume his teachers might argue for that...)

That depends on the parents and the law, but you are correct: in absence of any other action, primogeniture would still get the position...whether he had been schooled or not!

- Does the time attending Academagia include some sort of hands-on practical "work here for an extended period of time making funny partyhats with magic"-type of thing? I know Briardi (I think it was) send us out to do community service but was thinking more in term of work work - not solve the murder of Henderson & Barkley (The butler most certainly did it).

It includes it if you have the right Instructor, or if you choose to do it yourself. In general, the Regents like to keep Students as far away from the community as possible. It's not much of a community relations program, but it keeps the headaches down for them. :)

Of cause, there are and have been, many good and kind rulers. Problem is, when I think down danish history our monarchs (or rather our kings) - back when they had any real power - had a habit of following their gut - usually directly into war. For good or bad leaving many people killed and destitute with famine and disease claiming those who wasn't killed in battle.

Those who didn't start a war usually ruled much as they pleased, a few of cause did a really good job (only to have their moronic sons or other mess it up). In general we have been exceedingly lucky with our queens and among a rather long line of kings we've only had a few who would generally be considered good. (a number would be considered decent)

I'm being a bit harsh here and judging from the ideals of today rather than in their own time, and considering many of them didn't have an absolute power it isn't so surprising they had need for such bloodshed, so anywho.. *cough* sidetracked there.

Is the new and old gods the only religion on the market, and would it be considered an aggressive religion (as in trying to constantly convert the non-believers)?

As for the school-community relations: Good point, though I wondered if actual work might give the local community an idea that the students might do something good rather than just mess things up - then again, the risks involved... I can see why it isn't normal practice.

Regarding the libraries:

1. I assume that the sections of the Venalicium Library with a chance of detection are reserved for older students. Will we get permission to use the non-forbidden sections without fear of reprisal in the next year? (The maps section seems relatively innocent enough.) I do understand the disinclination to let students jump reclessly ahead though...

2. Exactly where are all the libraries located in the game? I've looked at the map of the school and read the lores on them but apart from the Library of Manetele (LoM) Being "secreted deep below the Academagia" I'm drawing a blank.

3. I noticed that if you take the background that gives you access to the Library of the Mantle of Stars (LotMos) and the LoM it doesn't give you access to the Library of Longshade (LoL). Is this because the LoL is in such tatters that nobody is expected to be able to get much useful information out of it? Thus instructors assume that you're up to mischief if found there?

4. The same background I mentioned said that access to those two libraries are "technically barred" from other students. Does that apply to all students or just first years? It seems to be a waste to not even let astrology students benefit from the LotMos. If it again is barred to first years will we get "official permission" to use any of these libraries in the future, or if this is not the case, what IS the reasoning for barring students?

5. Are there any other libraries that might be found on campus if we dig deep enough in future years???

Regarding superstition:

6. Do the people of Elumia have typical "break a mirror, walk under a ladder, aversion to black felines, the number 13, etc." superstitions, or ones unique to their culture, or both?

Regarding a certain ghostly familiar....

7. Can spirits "die"? I remember one part of Pam's adventure having an option to use fire to make ghosts dissappear. (can't remember specifics.) Or do they just reconstitute elsewhere?

8. Do they "Cross over"? I know about "the light" but that part seemed more "ghost-busting/capturing" than natural occurance.

Regarding magic/skill use:

9. Assuming that one had a certain rusty sword that had quite a bit of history to it, and wanted to restore it permanently, in a way that may or may not enhance it beyond what it originally could do... Which would work best? Revision, Enchantment, Weapon Forge knowlege, or a nice combination of the three?

I think I shall have to carefully plan my murders...If it's possible in the game, I'll want to play an assassin.

What happened to the Captain's wife, by the way? It's not mentioned anywhere.

Where is magic more predominant or are there places where magic is frowned upon more than in certain places for reasons other than 'mages are trouble'? Like superstitions tied to magic or against some sort of religion?

Yes MadHatt, what did happen to the Captain's wife? HMMM?!?! :P

Two of the (to me) most likely reasons to bar (at least first year) students are that the students are likely causing more trouble than it is worth and they may wish to be sure that their knowledge isn't open to just everyone - thus being restricted to the students who does exceptionally well and through that gain prestige (securing better deals with the wealthy merchants and what not that looks for an edge).

*whistles innocently*

I did nothing! Nothing, I tell you! Everything was like that when I got here.

To be honest, if I were a student practicing magic, I'd definitely cause trouble. Especially with Mastery. CANDY UNLIMITED!! Yay!

Considering the large amount of places that are restricted, though, I would imagine that they are dangerous to the kids rather than the other way around. Libraries can be in decrepit conditions or have certain magical effects that can be unstable. Not all of them, of course, but still. As far as I can tell, adults are rather keen on keeping children safe. It's just our characters that are too adventurous. Well for those who are like that of course. I had one character that spent every single minute in class or studying.

You are correct. As time goes on, overall Chance of Discovery decreases, *but*, the penalties for doing really bad things increase...;)

2. Exactly where are all the libraries located in the game? I've looked at the map of the school and read the lores on them but apart from the Library of Manetele (LoM) Being "secreted deep below the Academagia" I'm drawing a blank.

Most of them are housed in and around the main Academagia building, which is very extensive. You'll see some others pop up off campus, too, later.

3. I noticed that if you take the background that gives you access to the Library of the Mantle of Stars (LotMos) and the LoM it doesn't give you access to the Library of Longshade (LoL). It's the general condition, although there are some reasons why the Library does not seem to have a regular Librarian. Hmmm. :)

4. The same background I mentioned said that access to those two libraries are "technically barred" from other students. Does that apply to all students or just first years? It's barred to younger students, correct. I think these open in the 3rd year? I am not entirely sure.

5. Are there any other libraries that might be found on campus if we dig deep enough in future years???

Yep. :)

6. Do the people of Elumia have typical "break a mirror, walk under a ladder, aversion to black felines, the number 13, etc." superstitions, or ones unique to their culture, or both?

P.S

"Yes MadHatt, what did happen to the Captain's wife? HMMM?!?!"

Bahahahaah!

Fair to say yes. The ones unique to their culture are about 'walking under wings', general fear of falling, and the 'dragon's glare'.

7. Can spirits "die"? I remember one part of Pam's adventure having an option to use fire to make ghosts dissappear. (can't remember specifics.) Or do they just reconstitute elsewhere?

They can die, if their anchor is destroyed or reconciled.

8. Do they "Cross over"? I know about "the light" but that part seemed more "ghost-busting/capturing" than natural occurance.

It's not known, but as rigorous study of that generally fell under the purview of Gates, much may have been destroyed. I'll say no more here. :)

9. Assuming that one had a certain rusty sword that had quite a bit of history to it, and wanted to restore it permanently, in a way that may or may not enhance it beyond what it originally could do... Which would work best? Revision, Enchantment, Weapon Forge knowlege, or a nice combination of the three?

Revision would be the best, but of course, a combination would make things easier. Glamour, too, can help with this, if you don't mind it just 'seeming' to be fixed. :)

Nyaa;

Time magic as you have seen to date are actually Glamours, if I recall correctly, although there are stories of true time travel. (Interestingly, the original design called for it, with a detailed history so you could go back to a specific day and change things. :) )

It's not illegal, but that's probably because of it's theoretical nature.

I hate asking things I could have sworn I've read but...

Is Scandinavia and countries such as Russia part of the Academagia world - and if yes where? (and is that considered part of Elumia?). Are they considered backwater or civilized? (speaking from a Mineta-citizen's point of view) Any contact with these places? :)

Also, what does young people dress for at masquerades in Elumia? any ancient heroes or is it more just feathers and colours, maybe even otherworldly creatures?

What kind of jobs do wizard fill in general, and which kind of jobs does graduates of the Academagia usually find? (I assume more high-value jobs than the usual street-mage working at the local funny-hats store)

Has there in recent years been any incidents with dragons (to verify their existence)? (I'm not counting our Academagia-year - I think we had a dragon incident if I recall?)

Has there been any known 'creatures'/entities which survived solely by taking over others. (Extreme mastery) If not, would it then be considered by scholars or dismissed as impossible?

Time belongs to glamour? heh I could have sworn there was a reference to the Hitchhikers guide there ;)
