A few in game questions

Adrian;

There are too many local legends, but wolves are the most common in this region. King Morvidus was able to take several forms, if you believe the legends, and his warriors had many different forms as well.

Azhiamas wanders over the face of Cyve, but despite the conditions on the surface, the climate of Elumia rarely varies. Historian debate where on Cyve the isles once were- it's not possible to say in this era, although there are many lively debates on the subject.

An excellent question; in this era, navigation by stars and position of the sun is all that's necessary. As you note, apart from the mercantile traffic (which follows the coast, or, in some cases, actually sails over land) there is no long distance navigation necessary. Dragons have an unerring and unknown method of navigation, however.

Hmm... an unerring and unknown method of navigation... I KNEW it, those scaly buggers have DPS (Draconic Positioning System)!

So a massive amount of earth was just plucked up and nobody can tell where they were?

It's my understanding that such events would leave scars for at least a few million years! Several millenium might change the landscape some, I admit, but plants tend to not be able to cover gigantic gaping holes in the ground!

So at least some of the islands were in fact regular islands? I see....

More questions

1. Have magnets been discovered, and if so, are they used anywhere beyond novelties? are there Compasses? would they work?

2. I know basic steam engines are created in certain places, but have they at all been used for airship propulsion? Or is it still strictly wind powered.

3. In real life there was a limit to the size a ship could be built and be stable. are there similar limits to airships?

4. Regarding Kazus and the Mastery of the dragon, I understand that it was a young dragon, but are we talking a baby, or a 100 year adolecent? Hard for me to make a mental picture of this. And was it for a prolonged period of time or just a one time fluke for an hour or so?

5. I finally beat the "Sphinx Syndicate" adventure chain, (Very well writen btw) and I just have to ask, are the ENTIRE campus politics really that devious or is it just the Aranaz side of the rivalry? Either way I definately don't want to be getting on von Rupprecht's bad side.

6. Just curious, but how does one aquire a "flag" for future romance?

7. Are there any "cock-fighting" or "dog-fighting" places and are they illegal?

8. If the Captain of Mineta is technically the steward of the Empire of Man, then does that mean that there was a mayor of Mineta at one point? And if so, did the roles coalesce into one after the Empire.. ummm.. "shrunk"?

9. Playing cards. I read about "marat" but am unsure what it is exactly, is it supposed to be a cross between "regular" cards and tarot cards? I would appreciate some clarity.

10. And on the subject, Are similar things for gambling found? (dice, cointossing, etc) Are there unique forms of gambling there?

11. Given that mechanical refrigeration is surely not available (I'm sure that some rich folks have some magically freezing larders though) What is the emphasis on spices for food preservation, and how available are they?

12. Explain the quality of their silverware cuttery for me. "Silverware" is a well known term for eating utensils, even though today it is rare for them to be true silver, but in this era, I have a hard time believing everyone being rich enough to afford Real-silver silverware, and I don't see stainless steel "silverware" being available either. Did I make sense there?

13. Are there any animals that are harmless, yet have a disturbingly high reproduction rate that causes them to be banned anywhere? Think Rabbits on steriods, or perhaps aphrodesiacs! (Bad joke, I'm sorry!)

14. According to Nyaa's "World of Academagia" thread which is no doubt gathered from questions like this one, (As evidenced by the large number of references to questions I've asked ;) )Mastery was banned 3000 years ago and Gates 300 years ago. You also said that there are a few wizards alive from before the ban. Does this imply 3000 year old masters of mastery, or does that say only the first time they were banned, or are there only Gates masters alive from the old days?

15. On a similar question, I suppose that magic is the primary force in this, but are there REALLY 3000 year old texts on mastery in the forbidden section? Personally, I can see magic preserving them, but over time language has a way of changing. I have a copy (Not original, but basically a high quality photocopy) of an old Geneva Bible that is...Difficult..to read, and that's only a few centuries. And I can't see people rewording a text that they don't want people to read in the first place. I also understand that magic can help with that, but if it were me, I wouldn't be leaving any trace of my presence in such a room to study, so can you explain this?

16. I know gunpowder is invented from fireworks and firearms, but what about cannons? If they exist have they discovered rifling the barrel for better accuracy?

17. Pievre seems like quite the progressive nation, with Government mail, and the metric system. Do they do things that people did in real life but didn't pander out? ("Valuable" aluminum bars in bank vaults and "silverware" comes to my mind, for example?)

18. If there was a giant effort made between a large number of mages, say making a giant fireball or something as an example, is the increased effect of more mages in the spell linear or exponential?

19. I remember an adventure chain with one of the students, whom I don't remember which, where you help him with extra credit. In one step he gets transformed into a girl. Is that sort of thing.....Common? and is/isn't there a stigma to doing that?

20. The skill of illustrating. Is that just drawing, or does it apply to painting as well.

1. Have magnets been discovered, and if so, are they used anywhere beyond novelties? are there Compasses? would they work?

I am fairly sure I've seen compass mentioned somewhere, whether it is considered more of a novelty is likely debatable.

2. I know basic steam engines are created in certain places, but have they at all been used for airship propulsion? Or is it still strictly wind powered.

Don't forget they could just as well be magic-driven.

It seems fairly one-sided, but I wholeheartedly agree, I don't want to get on Rupprecht's bad side either!

14. According to Nyaa's "World of Academagia" thread which is no doubt gathered from questions like this one, (As evidenced by the large number of references to questions I've asked )Mastery was banned 3000 years ago and Gates 300 years ago.

Hmm.. I think there may be a 0 too many - I think the last time they were banned (which is still in effect) was 300 years ago. Given the fantasy setting I can imagine that some of those old buggers have managed to cling to life, one way or another.

haha good point. I'll admit I can't have thought that answer through fully.

Small question to the higher powers, do the Baron of Thei (the barony east of Oursouk) have a name yet?

(Small edit: Thei, not Thay. We don't deal with the red robes here.)

Another small one, do royalty tend to speak the language of whichever country is 'in' at the moment?

Like polish nobles would in the 16 hundreds(Pending investigation) speak latin and french being a very common language among those of blue blood?

(On similar note, would Regelian/elumian be the spoken language in Strozzan?

Freespace and Adrian;

1. Have magnets been discovered, and if so, are they used anywhere beyond novelties? are there Compasses? would they work?

They have, but they seem to point to places in Cyve, and have something of a limited use.

2. I know basic steam engines are created in certain places, but have they at all been used for airship propulsion? Or is it still strictly wind powered.

They definitely have, especially in Ruckmarn.

3. In real life there was a limit to the size a ship could be built and be stable. are there similar limits to airships?

Yes, there is only so much weight the Volaunge can carry before it sinks below the isles and cannot dock.

4. Regarding Kazus and the Mastery of the dragon, I understand that it was a young dragon, but are we talking a baby, or a 100 year adolecent? Hard for me to make a mental picture of this. And was it for a prolonged period of time or just a one time fluke for an hour or so?

It depends on the source you are reading. Most legends say that he Mastered it permanently.

Haha, no comment. :)

6. Just curious, but how does one aquire a "flag" for future romance?

Also no comment. :)

7. Are there any "cock-fighting" or "dog-fighting" places and are they illegal?

Unfortunately, I imagine that there would be, given the era, and they are not illegal.

8. If the Captain of Mineta is technically the steward of the Empire of Man, then does that mean that there was a mayor of Mineta at one point? And if so, did the roles coalesce into one after the Empire.. ummm.. "shrunk"?

There is still a Mayor, actually, but his role is generally ceremonial.

9. Playing cards. I read about "marat" but am unsure what it is exactly, is it supposed to be a cross between "regular" cards and tarot cards? I would appreciate some clarity.

You are essentially correct.

10. And on the subject, Are similar things for gambling found? (dice, cointossing, etc) Are there unique forms of gambling there?

In addition to the standard games, there are a few magical games available, too. I think you may see some of them in Y2, possibly Y3.

11. Given that mechanical refrigeration is surely not available (I'm sure that some rich folks have some magically freezing larders though) What is the emphasis on spices for food preservation, and how available are they?

Salt is available, but other spices trickle in- part of the reason for the commercial conquests currently going on, in fact.

Haha, the answer is that most people use wooden spoons (or, depending on the meal, bread) for their cutlery. On the wealthiest would have utensils of metal, and they would use precious metals- of which silver is the most common and cheapest.

13. Are there any animals that are harmless, yet have a disturbingly high reproduction rate that causes them to be banned anywhere? Think Rabbits on steriods, or perhaps aphrodesiacs! (Bad joke, I'm sorry!)

Or Tribbles? No. :)

14. According to Nyaa's "World of Academagia" thread which is no doubt gathered from questions like this one, (As evidenced by the large number of references to questions I've asked )Mastery was banned 3000 years ago and Gates 300 years ago. You also said that there are a few wizards alive from before the ban. Does this imply 3000 year old masters of mastery, or does that say only the first time they were banned, or are there only Gates masters alive from the old days?

I believe that must be a typo. There have been several Mastery proscriptions over the millenia. Gates, too, has come and gone. Both were most recently banned about 300 years ago, coincident with the destruction of Monteon.

I also understand that magic can help with that, but if it were me, I wouldn't be leaving any trace of my presence in such a room to study, so can you explain this?

Who knows what's in the Forbidden Section? You haven't been there, have you...? *Detention!* :)

16. I know gunpowder is invented from fireworks and firearms, but what about cannons? If they exist have they discovered rifling the barrel for better accuracy?

Cannons exist, but they are not rifled.

17. Pievre seems like quite the progressive nation, with Government mail, and the metric system. Do they do things that people did in real life but didn't pander out? ("Valuable" aluminum bars in bank vaults and "silverware" comes to my mind, for example?)

Not quite clear on this question, but Pievre is 'progressive', yes. :)

18. If there was a giant effort made between a large number of mages, say making a giant fireball or something as an example, is the increased effect of more mages in the spell linear or exponential?

I can't say that it's been widely tested over about 8; the risks of failure in a ritual are fairly dramatic.

19. I remember an adventure chain with one of the students, whom I don't remember which, where you help him with extra credit. In one step he gets transformed into a girl. Is that sort of thing.....Common? and is/isn't there a stigma to doing that?

It's not common, no, although possible. There's no particular stigma associated with it apart from a clever prank- unless, of course, you are doing it all the time, on purpose, in which case that's an entirely separate matter. :)

20. The skill of illustrating. Is that just drawing, or does it apply to painting as well.

I think it's just drawing, but I am not entirely sure.

*Bonus Question*

Although ships fortunate enough to have a mage on board often make use of magical winds, the large majority of the sailing craft must rely on natural winds and wind currents to get from place to place.

Adrian;

Sure!

I'm not sure what the question is about the Barony of Thei- if you mean the name of the isle to it's east, that is Fiatti. Although the name makes it look as though Thei is on that isle, the Barony is actually tucked into the eastern mountain of Dona Adria. Fiatti is itself governed between Cassatta and Ilica, both having interceded ages ago in a succession crisis. Before that time (before the Cataclysm), it was the Duchy of Fiora.

Royalty do indeed tend to speak the prevailing power- centuries ago, the common language of the Empire was the language of Monteon. Now, Merilien seems to be language of civilization and culture.

The peoples of Strozza do speak a dialect of Renaglian, yes.

Hmmm..

1. What do professors do during a year that they don't teach?

2. Will we continue to see new professors every year? And will we still get some classes with our favorite year 1 Professors?

3. What level of difficulty is it to temporarily revise yourself to look like another person for at least a day, and be sufficiently undetectable to stand up to close scrutiny? I'm guessing year 2, but would like to know. I'm guessing glammour would be insufficient for this.

4. Regarding the campus "PA" system, where is the "microphone" for it? I have a rock here that would love to use it.

5. Is it feasible to enchant a coin for increased "luck"?

Freespace:

1. What do professors do during a year that they don't teach?

All kinds of things, some related to research, some related to family or personal matters. You'd have to ask them. :)

2. Will we continue to see new professors every year? And will we still get some classes with our favorite year 1 Professors?

You'll see several new professors in Y2, and only a handful of the ones from Y1. It depends on your subject, though.

3. What level of difficulty is it to temporarily revise yourself to look like another person for at least a day, and be sufficiently undetectable to stand up to close scrutiny? I'm guessing year 2, but would like to know. I'm guessing glammour would be insufficient for this.

It's actually much easier to do that via Glamour, but as you note, close scrutiny is the problem. That kind of Revision is well beyond Year 2, though- that might place in Year 5, or possibly beyond, as changing form via Revision *without dying* is pretty sophisticated stuff. :)

4. Regarding the campus "PA" system, where is the "microphone" for it? I have a rock here that would love to use it.

Haha! The Professors prefer to keep that secret...for obvious reasons. :)

5. Is it feasible to enchant a coin for increased "luck"?

Yep!
