  1. In addition to the already mentioned Hero-U, the Quest for Glory devs are right now having a Kickstarter for the sequel/prequel called Summer Daze at Hero-U.

It's 80%, and ends in 60 hours as of writing this.

This around time it's a little bit different game, you don't have 3D enviroments but only move around via map/menus, similar to Academagia (well, the latter doesn't have a map).
You have two playable protagonists, a Wizard and a Rogue (guess who is which:)), each with different dialogue, and it's more of a sandbox/simulation adventure game with light RPG mechanics - you have a number of locations you can visit and it's up to you where you go and whom do you talk to, and you choose which of your skills you want to train every day, which I'm guessing will allow you to solve puzzles and issues differently, due to skill checks.

  2. I understand! :) I was just curious since there aren't that many posts, especially compared to the questions and new topics here - 9 posts for the past three months for example (starting counting at June), that's basically 3 topics per month. And some Steam users do look at the Steam forum activity before buying, so having a mod pop in there from time to time does help boost the sales. Or at least I make sure the game isn't abandoned if it's going to have a direct sequel, ssince it's kind of strange if devs completely ignore one game while working on the next, or it has some standing issues (which isn't quite the case here since I know you're working/considering a last patch to fix the last few found bugs). Now I know this game isn't abandonded and the the support is here, however not everyone manages to notice the stickied thread for some reason, or perhaps wants to make an account here, as can be seen from several posts asking for help there.  Or the discussions like "this game is abandonded" when the case isn't so, and they just didn't notice that you're active here or didn't care, so it might give a bad rep to some potential buyers or current owners, which isn't right, so I'd thought I'd raise some awareness.

Perhaps renaming the stickied topic could help, if you're still set on not using the forums?

Would it be legal to do research about why Gates was less random in the past, so long as no Gates magic were used? Or would that research be itself illegal?

Let me guess - because it was a known practice and people knew how to use it. Hence less randomness, since it wasn't people using something that they don't know as much about, esp. the theory behind it.

May I propose a suggested resolution?

The best one would be the Team admitting they forgot what they had written earlier and either outright retconning what they wrote previously or detracting their latest statement and going back to the no corporeal punishments they had before (I'd prefer the latter, but we'll see!). :)  Since the line, "You only know her name because she's still famous for having tried to bring back corporal punishment..." is very clear and it's hard to imagine how can you both have corporeal punishments and at the same time  someone who is famous for having tried - the keyword being tried, not succeded - at bringing them back, which means they are still banned/not allowed. But yeah, let's see what the Team says!

  5. Isn't it kind of strange how Legate hasn't said anything about the topic since we started debating about those two quests? Esp. as they bring evidence which does contradict what he just stated about the corporeal punishments.

Pretty sure you're just correct, honestly. I mean I couldn't give you an ingame quote or anything, but I'm pretty sure that tracking things through Astrology is easier if the item in question is "more yours", if that makes sense.

Thanks! That's how I meant it actually from the start, when I was mentioning having more marks on it than on the wand (since SvR refers to it as a mark).

I forgot to mention, the stage with VR also drops your Vitality by 2, in addition to the -10 Merit and the shirt. Considering that Astrology, by all accounts, should have been a viable solution I'm included to fold it into corporeal punishment, at least in practice. Maybe not on paper, but...

Normal rock, though one that the PC can describe in ridiculous detail. Nevertheless I highly doubt that the difference between the rock and the wand is enough to go from making it possible for a first year that's nor formally studying Astrology to making it not possible for a Professor. Even if VR never studied Astrology in his life presumably a professor would have better means of studying new stuff available to him than a first year Academagia student would.

Interesting, the -Vitality is notable. Although I thought it'd give you more -Stress than Vitality since SvR did say it was meant to induce stress temporarily.

Personally I thought that having had the rock for a long time would've put a stronger impression on it, and thus make it easier to track, but the Team could perhaps answer that question for you, since both quests are from the base game right?

Quote from The Quest for the Tipsy Fairy:

And quote from The New Girl:

I feel like I should add that Tacito Viadana, in one of his REs, is able to divine the location of the PC's missing keepsake rock. I also should mention that Tacito doesn't even attend Astrology classes. So at no point is that...process even remotely necessary, unless VR is thoroughly hopeless when it comes to all matters of divination. Also, that enchanted shirt is an actual item you get and can wear. +1 Stress, +1 Danger Sense and +1 relationship with VR.

So long story short old von Rupprecht just borrowed a few pages from Kratz' book, it seems.

He's not punishing you at all though for that, he's simply using the method to be stressed so they can find your wand. I mean, one could say he enjoyed doing it but it wasn't the punishment for losing it, that was the Demerits and (technically) the shirt. And it doesn't involve any kind of beating, one could argue it isn't really what one'd imagine under corporeal punishment? Although it's definitively not something you'd want to do, esp. not repeatedly, that would be torture.

Is the keepsake rock the pet rock familiar or a normal rock? If it's the latter, then saying it's his keepsake rock would make it obvious why they're good at it - it's got plenty of marks on it from the PC if they've had it for years, compared to the new wand.

@Legate of Mineta: One way to reconcile this with the continued practise of corporal punishment would be to say that she wanted more corporal punishment with harsher devices. After all, there is a reference to another Avila Regent who wanted to bring back manacles, I think - or was it flogging?

Related to that, is it possible for students to be exempted from some punishment types? Zoe, I think, is too sickly to endure harsh physical penalties.

Isn't "The New Girl" adventure  (Not Even a Mouse) give you a lot of punishment by Von Rupprecht if you use the wrong default exit at step 4?

However if the quest says she's trying to bring it back, and it's worded exactly this way, then it's a contradiction. How does Von Rupprecht punish you if you choose the wrong exit at the adventure? If it's not corporal punishment, then it's possible Legate and the Team either forgot what they originally wrote or they are retconning it.

Personally I much more prefer no physical punishment school, so I'm going to go with the former and pretend I never heard/saw Legate say this. ;)

you are aware that you can get a exotic familiar ingame once you reach zoology 11?

I think you told me before but I'd prefer to just select one and start with it so I can do the adventures, since getting a random one later is almost the same thing, except you keep reloading a more advanced save rather than char creation. ;) It would be probably faster though to keep reloading until you got hte one you wanted at Z11 than going through char generation though, however I think it's nicer to begin the whole game with the familiar. :)

  11. Since not everyone wants to keep on redoing a character just so they can play through the familiar adventures! :)

Exotic familiars only trigger their own specific adventure, right? It'd be great if in Y2 they'd affect more (and regular ones too), like familiar-specific steps and exits for adventures, due to people interacting with them and familiars being able to help you using their skills and abilities (and personality! :)).

  12. BMTmicro usually sends you a working link quickly if you email them that you need to redownload it again.

By the way, the Steam version has DRM so they'd need to remove it first before being able to sell the game elsewhere (unless they have a working copy without the DRM they could upload right away), which would be a great opportunity to push a no-DRM update for Steam as well. ;)

Exploration Difficulty. Basically when Explore (the action) rolls your Explore (the skill)/Luck v. 4 check to see if you pass and discover something you need to pass a v.8 to actually have a chance at discovering that particular location. Some locations have an ED that goes as high as 30, so it's not (always) just a matter of just investing enough into your Explore skill to always pass that v.4 check as far as exploring is concerned.

So I checked the files with Irfanview (some of them, since there are about 1550 files in there) and the largest ones couldn't be opened, however almost all of the smaller ones would show a message that it's a PNG file and if you let Irfan automatically add the .png to them, they'd open and you'd find the ingame backgrounds, character and famiilar portraits and some UI graphics when you sorted them according to size and checked out several files of different sizes.

Unfortunately the location backgrounds were the same like ingame, only 500x200, however the familiar portraits were much more bigger (1920x1080p) if someone wants to have a larger version of those.

  14. 3 minutes ago, Metis said:

...Blanking on what Irfanview is. Kinda busy right now with other stuff, so don't really have time to look.

Yes, it's a real ingame location. ED 8, located in the Academagia Grounds.

    What is ED8?

Ifranview is just an application for viewing various image files, so in case it's in format that's not supported by the Windows viewer, it could work in it. I have it, so I'll try it and let you know.

  15. 1 minute ago, Metis said:

Not sure how I'd even do that. Windows refuses to open them if I call them .jpg or .png files, no text editor I have is going to be able to make sense of them as textfiles, they're not .dll or .exe or anything along those lines since they don't have they "can't be run in DOS mode" error line, and them being shoved into a folder with over 1.5K other unlabelled image files doesn't really give me a whole lot else to go on.

Not even IrfanView works? Oh well. Maybe Legate could chime in or suggest software tools we could use to look at them?

I just checked my Steam and you can only save the cards if you own them by looking at them, or alternatively, going to this website:

    https://www.steamcardexchange.net/index.php?gamepage-appid-533480

By the way, is the Library of Matilda a real thing? What is it? How can I find it in the game? Hints only please, so I can let myself be surprised as to what it is! :D

Last I checked all of the .jgp files the game uses are plainly visible/accessible in the OfficialContent\Resources folder, just without .jpg extensions to actually mark them such. Minus the dozen largest ones, those are likely different files. No clue what they are, though.

I don't have the Steam version, though, and I doubt that Steam would save trading card art locally.

Will you  try looking at them to see what they are? I'll try it later.

A few years after launch- we weren't even aware of it at first.

I'm not sure about the Trading Cards.

Would it be possible to check where did you get the art for the Steam Trading Cards and see if you have more of them? The art there is bigger than what you see in the game.

Has anyone tried hacking the game to see if it contains the art files but only compresses them/makes them smaller when displaying them ingame?

No, it's not something we'll be looking at for a bit. But it's a topic now, so it will be discussed one way or the other.

Great! If you do ever release another patch, it'd be great if DRM was removed along with it - from what I've read, it should only take removing the DMR wrapper and that's it, right? At least it seemes that way from the links I've found and posted earlier in this thread. I think this wrapper was also the cause for some people's game not authenticating despite being online until they cleared their cache or something, as the output log they've copied had that the Steam login had failed to authenticate and so it terminated the Academagia process (it's in another thread I've found in this forum while looking around if anyone else has posted about the DRM previously).

Certainly! In any event, it couldn't hurt. :)

Hi! Is there any update regarding the DRM? Will it be removed? It's not such a bother but in the long term it'd be great if it was removed, since it means you can always play the game regardless of whether Steam is not working or not. Right now it means that whenever Steam offline mode fails (due to forced quit or something else) or Steam servers are unavailable, you can't play the game.
