Schwarzbart
You forgot one big thing its even for the European and maybe also for the American not to long ago (a vew Generations at max) when 14 year old considered as adult. And at some countrys the age where you have to marry is still around 12-14. i.e. the Convention on the Rights of the Child is from 20 November 1989. Adrian
I think we can safely assume that these kids have outstanding resilience. Magical disasters and violent duels mixed in with bullies and high peer pressure on what seems to be a daily basis. I figure either they die in the cellar or they come out after 5 years and can take on the world.
Esper
I am not talking about the legal stuff, I am talking about the mentality. You are just not mentally finished at that age, (no matter what different time have believed) so as Adrian pointed out the kids either comes out a lot mentally stronger, with violent (physical as well as mentally) tendencies because they learn in an early age that such measures actually works well or they end up being the next potential evil overlord and just have too hope that none of the ones that came out strong decides that they are the villain they need to beat in order to become the next hero. (Of course they could easily end up with more and less disturbing mix off it all).
Leoshi
Woah slow down everybody! I don't know how talking about using a sword in a magic duel can suddenly turn into a debate on maturity. All I wanted to know was whether the professors had given the students some special protection that makes sure one receives permanent damage in a duel. That's it. So everybody just
Legate of Mineta
No, no special protection. If, however, someone returns from a Duel with a severe injury, the Regents investigate- and the results are usually unpleasant for all parties involved. This tends to keep most damage down to a minimum, although there are some exceptions...
Esper
Sorry for derailing the subject, Leoshi. That one was on me
freespace2dotcom
Well, while we're on duels... 1. Can a person destroy a spell in real time? (That is, without having to capture it and diamantle it at your leasure) 2. In a duel-setting, since you have to make the phemes individually, how does the game know that you're casting dispell, as opposed to beginner's dispell. I know that other components are reqired, but the game doesn't allow that input, so... and general magic questions.. 3. I know crafting is going to be much more open in future years. Will we have the opportunity to experiment with phemes, and their other components in similar fashion to attempt to discover hidden spells? (that you won't automatically unlock once we know the phemes, as though it was unknown.) 4. Say that some person put a powerful negation spell on a magical artifact to inhibit it's power, but the effect was to negate all magic within a certain radius of the artifact. How does one negate that? Forbidden magic.... 5. For bags of holding, are they all illegal? or just to make them now? Once one is made (correctly) and no surprises happen in the creation, then are they then safe from the randomness of gates? Thus allowing for those made pre-ban (and can be proven to have been, I would assume) to still be legal? 6. What happens to magical artifacts of forbidden magic once discovered? Are they destroyed, or put away in some repository far far away from any prying eyes? is there criteria to decide what to do with it? gameplay/roleplay stuff... 7. Would it be possible to start a small side business (like tutoring, or wand repair/modifying, etc.) in future years? Or only apply your knowledge to some other person's venture for skill increases? 8. Will we be able to haggle store owners eventually? (That pheonix feather wand looks so cool!) 9. Can we eventually see adventures like "Oh, Freespace, you're such an excellent Negation student, and since you're so awesome, we really need you to close this multi-dimensional rift Ana Flavia created.... with a Revision spell.... We can't do it since we're too busy putting up the painting of the New Legate Von Rupprecht in the Grand Hall." Basically some really crazy awesome skill specific adventures. Setting question. 10. Exactly how does the familiar link work? I'd be under the impression that replacing one would be very difficult, but apparently we can just buy one if it takes our fancy? and how do they form in the first place?
Legate of Mineta
Freespace; 1. Can a person destroy a spell in real time? (That is, without having to capture it and diamantle it at your leasure) Advanced, but possible. 2. In a duel-setting, since you have to make the phemes individually, how does the game know that you're casting dispell, as opposed to beginner's dispell. I know that other components are reqired, but the game doesn't allow that input, so... You activate the border, linking in your Phemes, which 'Casts' the Spell. 3. I know crafting is going to be much more open in future years. Will we have the opportunity to experiment with phemes, and their other components in similar fashion to attempt to discover hidden spells? (that you won't automatically unlock once we know the phemes, as though it was unknown.) I think it's likely, yes. 4. Say that some person put a powerful negation spell on a magical artifact to inhibit it's power, but the effect was to negate all magic within a certain radius of the artifact. How does one negate that? Via Negation, of course! 5. For bags of holding, are they all illegal? or just to make them now? Once one is made (correctly) and no surprises happen in the creation, then are they then safe from the randomness of gates? Thus allowing for those made pre-ban (and can be proven to have been, I would assume) to still be legal? They are under suspicion, and illegal in many places. Your logic is correct, though- they are free of the 'randomness' post-creation. In Mineta, they are currently legal, but they must be registered with the Imperial Offices. 6. What happens to magical artifacts of forbidden magic once discovered? Are they destroyed, or put away in some repository far far away from any prying eyes? is there criteria to decide what to do with it? Put in a repository, far, far, far away. Or close, but unknown? 7. Would it be possible to start a small side business (like tutoring, or wand repair/modifying, etc.) in future years? Or only apply your knowledge to some other person's venture for skill increases? No comment! 8. Will we be able to haggle store owners eventually? (That pheonix feather wand looks so cool!) Yes. It was actually in Year 1 Design, but removed. I don't know if it will be back for Year 2, but it's on the table. 9. We want to, yes. It's a question of writing. Naturally, if you want to create such an Adventure, we'd look at including it in the DLC... 10. Exactly how does the familiar link work? I'd be under the impression that replacing one would be very difficult, but apparently we can just buy one if it takes our fancy? and how do they form in the first place? It's a good question, and something you will be finding out in the Years ahead. Replacing a link isn't difficult at all- preventing a link from happening...that takes effort. Adrian
Hmm bags of holding - wouldn't they be something of a permanent gate though? I am guessing they link themselves to a minor dimensional pocket or some such. (I love it that we can talk about this crazy abstract thing and yet it is all made up in the end )
Legate of Mineta
Adrian; It's proscribed to even *think* about Gates Theory. Detention for you!
Adrian
(!) I'll... *huff* Fine! Can it be with Viada or Sido? Are there any countries who are experiencing internal political tensions? I am thinking either differences in political thought, nobility against a central government or merchants? Which contries suffer the worst bout of unrest due to these causes? (Not that I am planning a coup)
Legate of Mineta
Adrian; Well, Medinei is a good candidate- it's ruled uneasily by two brothers, each with a solid claim to the throne.
freespace2dotcom
Hmm.. interesting.. I'd like to ask for a clarification on that Gates theory statement. Is it still proscribed in the professor's lounge and they just don't care, or are there some special clauses that would allow such discussion (and only discussion I'm sure) in certain places? And on the detention bit, how does the game decide who you're gonna get stuck with? That can make or break you if you're careless or in the early part of the game. I remember one time I got stuck with Professor Monetario and... *shudder* no... I don't think I want to remember that. probably wasted a good quarter year raising his detention skills, of which the only one I normally focus is astronomy... so it took a while.. and with all the detention... I... no.. I gotta find a spell that would help me forget that experience! ...Oh wait, that's Mastery... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Legate of Mineta
Freespace; If there are places where it is acceptable to discuss the Proscribed Pillars, they do not advertise it... Detention is largely random, although it is slightly weighted toward your Class Professors. I think this won't change in Year 2- the idea being that you'll never know who you run into. freespace2dotcom
Speaking of year two... Are you planning on revamping the user interface at all? I know some changes are inevitable and welcome, but I'm on the fence for the idea of a drastic art shift... I just need to know to brace myself. Legate of Mineta
Freespace; Oh yes, the UI is receiving a lot of attention. I don't think you'll have any troubles adapting to it, though, and the style of the artwork will remain a common theme, I believe.
retired_deer
Has there been any attempt at a portable UI? In other words, a user interface that opens and we can select which episode of the series we want to play? You change the interface, but not the game's content.
Legate of Mineta
r_d; It would be nice, wouldn't it? I don't think it's too likely, however, due to the differences in the engines.
Leoshi
Do the regents of the college do a headcount everyday so that they will know whether someone has gone missing? I'm assuming there is a spell to track them down right? Adrian might go missing from the school for a few days as he has volunteered to test a new invulnerability spell at a secret location (to catch a dragon). So I assumed that this is an appropriate question yes?
freespace2dotcom
I got a little bored, and so I created this little picture to represent how to cast a spell. I know of the other components to spells, but until we know about them and how they affect the end result, we can't visualize doing them. Please let me know if I got it right, Legate, or if there are any other bits to add.
Mikka
Do any students have nicknames they prefer to be called by (like 'Z' Zorzi)? Do any students prefer to be called by their last name over their first?
Legate of Mineta
Leoshi; Your Instructors do seem to have ways to determine if a Student goes missing, yes. Free; That's actually mostly correct! The border can be drawn at any stage, though, and just needs to be completed to 'cast' the Spell. Mikka; Good questions! freespace2dotcom
Cool! Not enough of a difference to bother changing and reuploading a new pic, and I would figure that it would be recommended to teach beginners to do things in a certain order to not mix anything up. Once you'd get used to it, then experiment away! I figured that kanji would be a good real-life substitute for phemes since they're both symbols that represent concepts. Some day you'll have to show us a "real" pheme or two.
Legate of Mineta
Freespace; That would be cool to see, actually. Maybe we can slip one in in Year 2?
Schwarzbart
I know its not Suggestion but maybe put one or two that suits in to the Display Mask of each College. At last if they are different like they are now.
