Well I mentioned on the KS my grandpa served on the USS Riley, the other two relatives I don't know much about except one served on a sub(I'm assuming Gato-class) and the other was on an LST-R.

'44 so really late. I posted on the ship suggestions page.

I wish I knew more on the sub the only thing I learned about it was a quote from after sinking a Japanese ship: "We surfaced and saw Jap survivors in the water so we broke out the Thompsons and had a ball." I'm sure you can figure out what that means.

As for the LST-R the only thing I heard about him was stories of seeing human heads on sticks along beaches and a mission where they steamed up to a Japanese held island fort and they pumped it full of fuel and set it on fire. I believe he was referring to Fort Drum in Manila Bay which was destroyed in a similar manner.

I'm torn between USN (Great Granpa was in the USN in WW2, Grandpa in Vietnam, Dad in Persian Gulf, Me from 2006-2012), or Japan. Great Grandpa was on a PT boat and a Destroyer (no idea which), but he bore no ill will to the Japanese. In fact he loved them... we're pretty sure we have Japanese relatives from the post war years. Also I've played KanColle for a year now so I'm somewhat attached to being called Teitoku.

My grandfather on my Mom's side was 442nd Nisei (he got wounded on-duty). He later worked as an engineer on the USS Enterprise (the nuclear one) .

Sometimes its better to not have the connections to the past i.e. when you know that the eldest son of your grandmother was because enemy soldiers got their hand on her. If the 3rd or even 4th generation after a war still think on revenge because of things happening then there will be a endless state of war.

The grudges are not only due to that past, but also due to the Asian veneration of the past. Most Asian countries still hold onto past grudges (Korea especially since it was picked on by China and Japan over the centuries) and that's why they can't really rise up to their full potential (I'm saying this as an Asian).

 

I guess it's because I'm just a big fan of history and my grandfather was quite proud of his service to the country (His family lived in Hawaii - a state that was a bit more flexible on Japanese-Americans...even after the Pearl Harbor attack). He died awhile back, but we do have his uniform, coins, medals, and his burial flag.

 

My grandmother (his wife) actually was on mainland Japan before the attack happened (she worked as a seamstress who made military uniforms). Her relatives smuggled her money so she could escape before the war broke out.

What you say is true- remembrance and understanding about the past is not healthy if it isn't done thoughtfully. That's a very important and solemn point to make on today, Memorial Day.

My grandfather served as a Machinist's Mate on an old Destroyer Escort that had been in WW2. This was in the lull between the Korean and Vietnamese conflicts. He told me some sea stories, most of which are not appropriate even with a moderately understanding crowd, so I will merely relate that he still recalls his 1st class in the engine room complaining that the ship was only built to go across the ocean once (with the assumption that it would get sunk) and since it was still around in the late 50's it was constantly falling apart and the components were not easily reached to be able to repair.

My uncle was in the Royal Navy as a submariner. Wasn't on any WWII ships, but he did regale of a time in the 70s when his sub got chased by two Victor-class and one Foxtrot-class Soviet subs

Sadly, I don't think we could include anything with my family. The only member in my family tree that was in WW2 was part of the Air Force as a Lancaster Pilot.

You guys are lucky. No military history that I know of, and I'm not terribly proud of that. That's not to say I don't love my family, it just sucks that I gotta go talk to all my friends' grandparents to hear awesome war stories. That and it's even harder to get my family to approve of my increasingly likely choice to join the military.

The only military histories in the family that I know of are of my great-grandfather, who fought on Mount Pasubio during WWI, and my grandfather, who made his military service in Lybia, just as the reconquest was being ended.

For your information, that reconquest was done by using concentration camps, poison gas, and "military justice"; I have an album of photos, and the last page has pictures of hanged people.

 

I made my doctorate thesis on it.

don't worry about that too much. My grandfather was drafted from Puerto Rico to kill people he never knew for a land he has never seen before. By his own words, he wasn't a patriot just a man who got a letter in the mail that said join or jail. My other grandfather dodged the draft by hiding in the jungle of El Yunque. I enlisted in the Coast Guard and my family was cool with that. But if that's not "military" enough for you ?, just talk to your family. Stand your ground about joining but ask if they have other preferences. My family said no Army, no Marines. So I worked around that. Good luck to you and all your future endeavors.

If you need advice on military just think of what you want to do in the military. I enlisted back in 2011 as an Infantryman in the US Army(still am and about to finish my second deployment to the Stan). My family tried to steer me towards the Air Force or Navy(my parents were both Air Force, though my mom was an MP in the Army until they said she was too short), but I was too stubborn to listen.

Super looking forward to playing the USSR in this one. Mostly because I like some of their ships (though the bigger players IJN, The Royal Navy, US Navy, Nazi Germany's have more) it would be a good time to listen to more russian as I continue to learn the language itself (Cyrillic IS A TOUGH THING TO READ oh goodness why).

 

Totes looking forward to the release of the game and can't wait to sit at work playing it as well during my lunch break HAHA ;-;

Also, I'm reading "The complete idiot's guise to ww II" and Italy's role in the war is pretty interesting.

Allow me to say that they took one event and built her around it.

 

Sure, at Matapan her crew panicked, went overboard, climbed back again and went for the alcohol; but for the rest of her career she was a highly respectable flagship of a naval squadron (one of the highest operative commands of the Regia Marina).
