Legate of Mineta
Currently, for the United Kingdom's 21" Mk V Torpedo, we're using essentially the Mk IV for weight of explosives. However, we'd like to know the actual weight, if any of our historians have it...?
von_Lipstig
Spoiler without 1919 Annual Report of the Torpedo School ? var 1 ++from Mk IV (Mk VI had ~506kg) var 2 /// Kents used Mk 5 torp, which had 12800m at 25kn / 227kg charge ... Australian ones used Mk 7 (35kn / 15300m / 340kg charge) translation, veracity unknown var 3 Spoiler Mk V was conceived as a 15,000yd (at 29kts) torpedo which could be loaded into all existing above-water tubes. It had a much greater negative buoyancy than previous British torpedoes, hence needed unusually large tail fins to reduce its running angle (trim). It also had new gyro control gear, which it was hoped would decrease the chance of gyro failure due to the angling gear. After large-scale cancellations at the end of the war, about 800 remained on order. They were to be assigned to capital ships for above-water tubes (Hood, Furious, Glorious class and Renown class), to the carrier Eagle, to the Raleigh class cruisers, to ‘D’ and ‘E’ class cruisers, and to flotilla leaders and ‘W’ class destroyers. Close-fit torpedo tubes, which equipped some ‘C’ class cruisers and some destroyers, would be unsuitable for Mk V. At this time efforts to make the big Mk V run properly at 44.5kts (as designed) were abandoned, their negative buoyancy being too great. The torpedoes were satisfactory at 29kts and 35kts. The original Mk V weighed 3736lbs, but trials showed that reducing weight, mainly by thinning down the air vessel and accepting lower pressure and hence less range/speed, gave a more satisfactory torpedo (3393lbs). This was the torpedo issued as Mk V, but the data in the table are for the original heavier weapon. Among the reasons for accepting lower air pressure were that existing ships could not generate the 3200psi Mk V would have required, and that the heavier torpedo, which would have sunk at the end of its run, was not acceptable in peacetime. The new version was given a third speed setting, 25kts for 15,800yds. With a 2500psi charge performance was 35kts/9500yds, 29kts/12,500yds and 25kts/14,500yds; another 500yds could be expected at 35kts and another thousand at 25kts or 29kts with higher pressure (2650psi). s: Naval weapons of WW 1, N.Friedman *popcorn*
