Ranielle Limeleaf
I just tried making a clique named "Fart Smellers" and it worked. Maybe I'm just dirty, but is this intended for a game rated for 9 year olds?=P Those are the same little people who look at dictionaries for dirty words and laugh inanely after all. Draigh
Just because they are 9 year old, does not mean they are not allowed to use those names if they want to. It's not a multiplayer game, so no others are affected by their choice of names. And they appearantly already know those words/terms and seem to be wanting to use them... Using a filter might cause other words/names to be unallowed because (part of) the word is forbidden. And then we would also be getting a discussion on whether some words (like gay) are allowed or not. Secondly, I do not find 'fart' all that bad a word...? But let's say you want to forbid 'fart' and I come up with the clique name "Farthest Reachers", it would be blocked. And the inventive 9 year old would probably write something like "F4rt Sme11ers" and be laughing even more, because they outsmarted the profanity filter. Ranielle Limeleaf
Well, good points. But usually the profanity filter is put for the parent's benefit anyway, such filters are called "Parental Control" for some reason.
Draigh
To ease the mind of the parent while the child goes rampant? I think you should be worried more about the mods then about any content the children enter.
Ranielle Limeleaf
Mods are a choice though. I mean, I'm pretty sure there will be mods involving intimate romance *cough*. I also know a few people who grounded their kid for a week for playing Mass Effect 2. "You don't %*!+ with Aria." And that's like the only cuss word in the game. Mikka
And honestly, if they did put a profanity filter in- I imagine 'fart' wouldn't make it. Of all words to block, I don't think that would cause too much of a blink. In any case, though, it's not the job of the game to babysit someone else's children. What is it rated, PG? If mom doesn't want her kid using the word fart, then... mom should let the kid know and keep an eye on it. Look at MMO's for 'kids'- Free Realms, that Disney one. At this point, it's hard to hold any sort of conversation in them... because once you ban most English swear words, then any kid wanting to swear is just going to pick to a different language (typing 'swearing in other language' in a search engine isn't that difficult ). And there are a *lot* of languages out there.
Legate of Mineta
The game has no profanity filter on text- which leads to that interesting result, Mikka. It's a good thought, though- we'll have to research the difficulty of including an option to filter. Thanks!
laclongquan
Then please make it optional to eliminate that filter. I hate censure. Anyway, if you got offended by Fart I say you got a too sheltered a childhood. And didnt get much toilet humour jokes.
Legate of Mineta
Laclongguan; If we did implement it, it would definitely be optional.
Schwarzbart
I dont think its work to add a big filter db just for 4 Fields where some one can chose a name. It's a singleplayer game so only people who play/watch it on this computer cna see the words at all! And if this is a problem the parents even sould block or add a filter for theyr kids for Mailing, sending Sort Messages, using Texteditors like Notepade ect. I dont think this is resonabel. Also because the game have to run with admin rights you realy bether have a eye on people use it beside your own! And if Laguage suport for other Languages will be added at some point bether complet forgett the idea of a filter because all known filter only work halfway resonable for 1 language and even can be tricked there with somethin like "h e l l o " and the kids know this also. And dont forget the colertar soch filter have in one of the MMO it was even so bad that every 2nd / 3th chat line got something filteres without continging any bad words. because they filter something like was just because of the as. If a cild know the words and also think its fun to add them as name in a singleplayer game dont you think the damage is done then already? And even if the team add a filter I hope its optional to install because I fear that the filter alone will add a huge db that will take unecary place on the storage device or even need a inet conecton to work at all. laclongquan
Oh yeah, never underestimate the ingenuity of those little devils, either in game or in real life. To be frank, filter is a losing measure, especially in these days and ages when anybody can ask anything and receive workable solutions.
Schwarzbart
I think the much easyer solution for the team would be a option that give the parents tha ability to enter all 4 fields in front and make this entrys able to protect per PW. Nikolaj
Aren't filters usually used to protect people from the profanity of others? I don't see the point of that in a single player game, to be honest.
Mumbles
Mods are a choice though. I mean, I'm pretty sure there will be mods involving intimate romance *cough*. Ew. The characters are thirteen. I certainly hope we won't see those until a couple years down the line. I don't mind the mods, just the age. Kids. Ick. Put me in on the optional filter if one is implemented.
Ranielle Limeleaf
Well, if you played Fallout 3 or Oblivion or any other moddable game, you'll see things that will make you wish you could bleach your brain. Give a man a pencil and he'll stab himself in the eye. Give a man a pencil and paper, and he'll draw you a %&^. That's the society we live in at the moment in a nutshell. edit: so there's profanity filter in the forum, good.

That's the society we live in at the moment in a nutshell. edit: so there's profanity filter in the forum, good. Oh, I know. I've played all the Bethesda games plus Black Isle and a couple MMORPGs. Heck, I started gaming back in the golden days of text adventures. I think my first game was Leather Goddesses of Phobos along with some of the Leisure Suit Larry games. I'm not easily offended at all. I've been known to install a few sex mods myself. But, IMO, putting kids in "intimate" settings is still in poor taste. Depending on where the game creators are located, they might not want to host anything that could get them called for encouraging child porn. And you know there are idiots out there who would do that. Will someone make a mod like that? Wouldn't be surprised at all. Probably make naked portraits with ridiculous dimensions, too. Just putting my 2 cents out there folks. Wait until year three or so before you get too carried away. Please? At least for the intimate part. ETA: Because noun/verb agreement is important if you want to appear edumacated. *ahem*
Ranielle Limeleaf
Yes, it is a sad lonely world out there, you wouldn't believe how many times a day you have to tell people where your eyes are. Anyway, it's not that I'm offended by the lack of the filter but I know that there are parents who would like the feeling of control over that sort of thing, it won't really stop anyone but maybe make a few parents sleep better at night. ( and more importantly dish out some $$ for our Black Chicken overlords )

( and more importantly dish out some $$ for the our Black Chicken overlords ) Why, enjoying the view. Where else would they be? Yep. And if we want Year 2 and beyond, that $$$ is mighty important. Yeah, filters are stupid, when as someone mentioned, only the player will ever see the profanity they wrote. However, I have an infinite faith in the stupidity of humanity as a whole. If it makes possible buyers happy and doesn't mess with the fun, so be it.
Nikolaj
If it makes possible buyers happy and doesn't mess with the fun, so be it. Sure, but the time spent making the filter could be spent improving the game in some other way, thus making other buyers happy. Although I don't really have any idea of how much work making a profanity filter would be.
Schwarzbart
I personal dont think that the team can put together a Filter by them self in a resonable amoth of time so it ends up buying it from a other company what in return means for just 4!!! Lines in the complet game you can enter something they would need to ask a vew $ more. (Because the programm is already sold the option to get the money in they have to pay for such a filter is a DLC and how many people you think would pay 5-10$ to add a bad language filter for a singleplayer programm?)
