That's like picking Bulbasaur because it has the type advantage against the first two gyms instead of because its a cute dinosaur plant thing.

Which Belle you think is cutest should definitely be the most important factor in your choice.

Not really, no. You pick the nation that will support your style better. You like to send out recovery fleets to gather? The pick something that works with that. Are you just going to wait on the natural, slow, and capped resource generation? Then find a nation that has a higher cap, or faster generation. Its more get the most out of your style rather than suffer because you chose a Nation that is not in line with your style or maybe even counter to it.

Yes Belles should matter. I want the Texas, I have made this more than clear here, but what does it matter unless I get her as a starter choice is all I'm saying. I doubt any of the Belle's I really want will be starters so why not pick what makes the game more fun for me and just acquire the Belles while playing the game?

I picked Bulbasaur so I could name him BulbaFett and dinosaurs are cool.

While you do make a good point, I still think it's silly not to go with the nation that will get you to your favourite Belle the fastest.

And that's not wrong. I'm going with the US to get my Texas and my Enterprise and CV-16 when she is launched. But that won't get me a Bismark, A Hood or a Nagato without a lot of work. I'm just pointing out this choice could be way deeper than we are giving credit for it.

Both of you make very valid points. In the end, it's up to the individual desire of the player. I think it's implied that playing as one of the other nations (Poland, Turkey, Spain) is going to be more difficult, but it can may be more rewarding to those that persevere. I think it's generally assumed that the USA is going to be one of the easiest starts considering. However, I'm not taking that into consideration. I want to get Hood, Rodnol, and Nelsol, and it's confirmed Bulldog is my preordained waifu. That coupled with being English and those three battleships being my all time favorite ships, and I'm well firmly set on going with the United Kingdom.

I thought of this question and didn't know where to ask it so I'll ask here. Are there any plans or mechanics already in game that allow battleships that have torpedoes to use them in battles? Such as Rodnol or Tirpitz? And will their design have any reference to that fact?

First, Procyon, that is the best sig.

W99;

Yep! Torpedoes are just another weapon, and will be used if the Belle has it, is in Range, and her Flag Command allows it.

As far as I know, there aren't any Battleship Torpedo Dashes, though, so they'd only use them at Short or in a Brawl. :)

That's pretty awesome, and it gives me something else to add to what I have for Rodnol (I've been trying to get it best as I can for the past two days)

I'm also surprised at how many posts I've managed to accumulate in two days

Of course it's best sig. FOR THE GLORY OF CARDASSIA :D.

What happen in the Parade that made it ugly?

The fact that Klingons and the Cardissians are from two different Sci-fi shows

They're both from Star Trek, but the Klingons declared war on the Cardassians in the show :).

Billions of years ago, at an Earth Day parade I was volunteering at, there was a Klingon lifestyle parade. As they marched by, I shouted: 'Rule Cardassia!'

...

Things turned ugly.

I'm sure you fought well against those sharp-tooth, micro-brained idiots :).

I'm split between the USN and RN.

The USN because by late war, they had quite a lot of excellent ships.

The RN because of the Canadians and still having quite a number of good ships.

As for the Germans, well, the Navy, especially the surface fleet, was probably the least loyal to the Corporal, and Admiral Lutjens pointedly wore a Kaiserliche Marine Dirk instead of the Kreigsmarine Dirk. Despite that, it will be hard to disassociate the German ships from the Nazi party and the atrocities conducted by that regime.

I have a feeling quite a few players will be uncomfortable with playing the Axis faction, particularly Germany. Japan might also be uncomfortable, especially in the US and in Asia, given the actions of IJA soldiers and a number of IJN officers who committed war crimes at the time.

I feel that, as someone starting with either Germany or Italy (most likely the latter), I should address that point.

I do feel a bit awkward about my choice but not so much because of what the Nazi's did so much as since I plan on streaming the game that others might consider me a Nazi Sympathizer even though that's absolutely redonk. However, I seem to recall somewhere on here mention that we might be able to change things for the better within our respective nations. That would be a goal of mine, even if it's just me Role-Playing that on stream. That, and well I won't be using the Nazi Swastika but rather the Iron Cross.

Just separate the politics from the military unit. Fight on behalf of the Kriegsmarine...not the Nazis :).

You do have valid points as people may associate VB Germany with the Nazi party and all their war crimes. Same with Japan. However this is a game were not a lot of people will not know about thus giving us the chance to influence the opinion of the masses. If people in the community can prove to the majority that to playing as the Axis nation is not a big deal then I feel like most people will be okay playing as them. Their are still people who will still be uncomfortable with playing as them and people who will call players the choose them as Nazi sympathizer but they will be in the minority.

I had thought about this too. It is hard to separate a military from a government, because governments use the military to forward party ideologies. But at the very base, this is a game where you can change all of that. Its alternate history. Those atrocities have not happened yet. It does not excuse the real world happenings but the fictional one are redeemable.

You do have a point...but I'm mostly in the game for the hardware :). I learned to take history with a grain of salt...since my relatives (Asian) take history very seriously (Asians care a lot about the past...).

Ummm, the Rape of Nanking happened in December 1937, almost two years before the game starts. Many of the worst Japanese atrocities committed in China are already history on Sept 1, 1939.

As far as Germany, although the worst is certainly still future in Sept 1939, Kristallnacht happened on Nov 9/10, 1938. Over 100 Jews murdered and countless lives destroyed. So no, there isn't a pass there either.

As far as serving the Kriegsmarine rather than Hitler, we're getting a window into the perspective already care of Ms Scharnhorst. "That Austrian Corporal" was a common refrain of the German professional military before the success in Poland and France. Still, this seems to excuse those who actually permitted Hitler to commit his worst atrocities. Poland had more Jews than any country in Europe save the Soviet Union itself. If not for the generals, Hitler would never have been able to gain Poland and murder millions of innocents. Ann Frank might have lived a long, full life in Holland. The list goes on and on. The German military damn well enabled the slaughter and many non-SS were deemed culpable in Nuremberg.

But on the other hand, those who do not study history are forever damned to repeat it. I don't believe in burying the past. Games that whitewash National Socialism out of Germany are more of a problem, IMHO, than those that include it. I grew up in the 1970's playing war games with my dad, the cardboard counter/hexagonal map kind from Strategic Publications, Inc (SPI). They displayed the swastika. I think that's a reasonable tradition to walk down.

On the other hand, I totally sympathize with Nel and would likely do the same as she will do if sharing the game with others - use the iron cross. I'm no entrepreneur and I won't tell BCS what to do, but they may want to seriously consider what symbols to use in marketing when the time comes. I was kinda surprised to see them use the swastika in the Kickstarter. I'll be honest, my interest in the game rose because of it, but at the same time when next spring comes around I hope they do some serious market examination to ensure that they don't cause themselves more harm than good by displaying these symbols in advertising.

I'm almost certainly going to start the game as Germany, because by far and large, the Graf Spee is my favorite ship, followed closely by the SMS Emden, who unfortunately will not be in the game.

If possible I'd like to open up a diplomatic alliance with the U.S. and Japan, not only preventing the war in the pacific, but getting access to their belles, as well as giving Germany military help from the single strongest nation in the war production-wise.
